I met the a dean of a top medical school recently, and I told him I'm interested in his school's program in the next cycle. He said to send him and email, and asked me when I would visit and everything. Also, that he was on the review committee and he would remember me along the way.

What do you make of this?

Well, unless "remember you along the way" is adcom slang for "you're accepted" I wouldn't put much stock in it.

email him your info and whatnot
won't hurt (i don't think)
expect the worst, hope for the best.

If I were you... in a month or so, I would email him your specific interest in the school and what you've been doing since you submitted your apps, and what you plan on doing in the upcoming school year.

Goodluck!

lol this probably means absolutely nothing, unless your application is very close to being acceptable in the first place.

Don't get too excited. It's a year away and the dean encounters thousands of interested applicants each year.

Go ahead and contact him, it can't hurt. Maybe he liked you or something.

I agree that you should contact him, and that you should also not read too deep. I had a lot of adcom members and such who would say things like "your a top candidate" or "hope to see you next Fall", and even "If you choose to come here next Fall". Looking back it really didn't seem to improve my chances, because I got crunched at a number of those schools.

Also write a $500,000 check as a thank you card.

Yea, basically they say they will help you so that if you get accepted on your own merit they get some credit. If not, then you are not going to their school anyway so they don't care.

OP, it sounds like you have had a very casual encounter with this dean (are we talking Dean of admissions or what). He's not really going to help you on that basis.

I think the only way it would help you is if you have a great application and would get accepted at that school anyway, and if it was between you and another guy with the same stats, he could remember you. There's so much luck in this process any little bit could be all it takes to get your name in. It's a good thing just not going to be what gets you in anywhere.

Where'd you meet this dean?

I met him at a conference at the university where I do research. I was the only ugrad there out of 50 people, and so I told him I'm applying for the program, and I'm interested.

My stats are very competitive with the school. It wasn't a run of the mill encounter in the hall way.

No problem e-mailing. Person's not saying "OH MAN, SKIP THE COMMISSION, YOU'RE IN." You STILL have to do well on the interview. If you're a complete nutcase the dean isn't going to say "IM INSANE, LET HIM IN."

Help can mean anything and likely means making sure you have the correct information in terms of getting your application together. If you believe you are competitive for the school, then add it to your list but short of the Dean sending you an acceptance letter, this "help" doesn't mean too much. Good luck.

You haven't taken the MCAT yet, have you?

I love your sig, the funniest I've read 🙂

Send him an email and remind him of who you are then ask him some complex question about how you could "enhance your resume" for his medical school.
