I've been averaging in the mid to high 20's on my AAMCs, but it's now to late to cancel the exam. Should I just void it before taking it or should I take it and void it?

If you're aiming for 30+, then I doubt you'll achieve that based on what you're currently scoring (sorry 🙁). I would void before taking, sign up for a new test date, and keep studying. I know there are people who end up scoring a few points above their average, but there's no way anyone can really count on that. Keep studying, don't lose hope!

Why void before taking? He might as well take it to get a feel for the actual test and void at the end.

Take it and and void. Since you can't get a refund anyway, might as well get your money's worth.

I'm afraid I might get the urge to not void it. How much does a mid/high 20's hurt?

Depends. For DO, not so much. For MD, considerably. As far as getting the urge to not void it, make the decision to void it before you go in. If you go in all wishy-washy, then you may be tempted to keep the score in spite of the not so great practice test scores. Also, learn some self-control. At this point, you should know better than to willingly shoot yourself in the foot.

Take it and void.
Try to focus on looking at how the passages are structured + how the questions are asked on the real thing.
That's what I did last time when I was in the same situation.

Ultimately, it depends on what you're aiming for (MD vs DO, school ranking, etc.) and what the rest of your application looks like (GPA, EC's, etc.). For MD, a mid/high 20's score will hurt your application. How much depends on the rest of your app.

Money is the easiest and safest thing to waste in this game.
Don't take chance if you are not confident.
