I need a good book to inspire me! A good medical memoir? A good biography?

I just signed up for my first round of boards and feel a little overwhelmed. I tend to score on the lower end of my class and need to rejuvenate, refresh and inspire myself. I've read some good medical memoirs in the past such as, "Mountains beyond Mountains", "white coat" and the book by Ben Carson ( gifted hands). Any other good books? I really think a good book would give me the energy and the inspiration to study hard and go forward! Have you guys read any good books? Any recommendations?

It's not really a memoir or anything like that, but I felt that How Doctors Think by Jerome Groopman, MD was a good read.

My wife just bought me Stiff by Mary Roach. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, I'm hoping to over the holiday break.

I suggest Game of Thrones and the rest of the Song of Fire and Ice series.

Come on, folks. Non-medical things will keep you sane during boards study, not more medical crap.

This Won't Hurt a Bit: (And Other White Lies) by Michelle Au
and
In Stitches by Anthony Youn

I found those two books to be particularly motivational and humorous

The Patient in Room 9 Says He's God. Louis Profeta.

I think I have the perfect thing for you. Check out Tess Gerritsen's books. Shes a retired physician and writes medical murder mysteries. My favorites in her work are the Surgeon, Harvest, Gravity,Life support and Body Double. Heads up though, if you've watched that Rizzoli and Isles show, it might be a spoiler, since the show is kinda based on her books. I'd still read them anyway, she's terrific.

Blue Collar, Blue Scribs or Hot Lights, Cold Steel. Both are by Michael Collins. Otherwise I find anything by Atul Gawande (Complications and Better) pretty inspiring, although they are not exactly memoirs in the traditional sense.

👍 Agree completely w/ Michael Collins' books. Finished Blue Collar, Blue Scrubs this past weekend. Love the way he writes!

The House of God. Mandatory reading in the hidden curriculum.

Samuel Shem's HOG hands down must read. (Not PC) but remains enduring. Gomers, lols,, mony in sh££, and many other slang derivations.

The book from which the movie and TV series, MASH, by R.Hooker, a Gen Surgeon during the Korean War, hard to find but a great read.

Cutting Remarks by Sidney Schwab was a very interesting memoir from a general surgeon.

👍 for In Stitches. It was a quick easy read that made me chuckle. As for inspiring, I'm sure there are books that are more thought provoking, but it's something you can easily finish in a day.

I recommend reading "Paper Dollhouse" by Dr. Lisa Masterson. My mom bought it for me as a birthday/ congrats for getting into vet school gift. It is very inspirational as it pertains more to medical students than veterinary students. I think you will really enjoy it!🙂
