So the problem is this. I am a MS4 and am interested in neurology. I recently received a failing score on my step 2. I have a step 1 score of 203. I was told by my dean's office that I could block my score from being given to schools. I was planning on doing that and then taking step 2 again at the end of october. I have just read that there is no way for me to block just step 2 and not the entire transcript. I just uploaded my eras today and asked for my usmle score report (so it was not in there before the step 2 score came out). I do not know what to do? Should I wait to send out applications? I need an honest assessment of how bad this is?

Hey Friend I am in same situation as u. I got 213/88 in Step 1. Prepared for 2 and a half months after step 1, & gave step2 CK. Felt much better b4 and after giving the exam. I never expected that i wud ever fail.,......in fact i was expecting better result than step1.

The result came on 5th Sept.....2 days b4 my CS was scheduled. I was shattered........score 74 .....just 1 short of passing
But i went and gave my CS 2 days later.

I dont know whats up with NBME.....i know a few guys who got in high 90s but have got low scores in CK.......the scores seem they have been given randomly over past 1-2 months

U can block to resend ur transcript.....but it wud eventuallly appear to all programs.....

I am practically out of this match. Coz i will take a break and retattempt a few months later, maybe this time withe better prep.
So i will apply may be next year

can i ask if u guys used usmleworld and what your percentage on it was?

if you had submitted your ERAS before the step 2 score came out then there was an option where you could submit your USMLE transcript "as is" the day you submit ERAS and any scores that were pending at the time of submission would just show as pending on your USMLE transcript, it would be your responsibility to resubmit new scores when they are available. this is the option a lot of people pick who are waiting for step 2 scores but are scared that they failed because it allows you to retake the exam later and get a pass all while delaying programs from seeing that you had failed it once - eventually they will see all of this before you start residency but at least by then you will have a pass for step 2 after having retaken so it wont matter. the other option was to just submit everything "as is" and then have any pending scores automatically resubmitted when they became available from the NBME.

your step 2 score is already out though and on your usmle transcript and you havent submitted your ERAS app yet. that sucks in that its impossible to hide it from programs now, they will all see the score the day you submit ERAS. its not the end of the world though, just take step 2 again ASAP. even if you had been able to delay them from seeing the score they would still have seen it eventually, all this means is that now you wont have the luxury of retaking and getting a pass before showing them the old failure attempt. just focus and try to work on any time issues or anything else you think might have taken you down on your 1st step 2 date, in the end you will be fine.... just sucks you had to go through this bumpy road but you will be ok.

it may be worthwhile to get a score recheck
at least thats what i would do

its very strange to average 65 on usmleworld
and come out of the exam thinking u did better than step 1 score
and end up failing

even if the score isnt a mistake
i would shell out the $50
just so there are no doubts

I am still doubtful coz i have heard on a forum that in throughout the USMLE's history there has never been a score change after a recheck......on another forum one guy said that his friend got a 10 point score increase after a recheck......i am still thinking about it.

Anybody has better ideas?

Did you guys feel like you were doing terrible on the exam when you took it? Now I am so scared! 🙁

I actually never felt that I was doing terribly. Rather I had that feeling during step 1 in which i was being bombarded with things i never heard of.
In step 2 , i thought i had done better than step 1 , so i thought i wud be scoring near equal or greater.

But the result was quite opposite,

If the score is relative thing, probably a lot of people did much better than me. I was also surprised by timing of my result which was less than 3 weeks.

this is the exact same thing that happened to me. i took the exam on July 19 and got my paper score 3 weeks later.

i passed step 1 with a score in the mid 80's and walked out of there feelling like i failed. for real, it was just a big guessing game on step 1. there were VERY FEW questions i knew for sure on each block for step 1.

for step 2, i thought i knew much more and i knew that they were talking about in each question..........and failed with a 72.

i did nbme 1 before the test and got 420, did UW with 59%.

for this 2nd time around, i read FA, b&W again, and redid UW scoring in high 70's. i don't understand this test. and everyone said it's easier than step 1 😕

Is there something wrong with NBME? I have seen so many guys who did so well on step 1 from mid 80s to mid nineties scoring in 70s or failing in CK?

Has NBME raised the % of questions to be answered correctly to pass?I dont know wats happening?
And I am not sure if the score recheck is worth?

i think the score recheck isn't worth it. no one has had a good outcome from it.

but seriously, it's not like i didn't study for this test and just took it after a week of looking over stuff. i read B&W, most kaplan material and did all of UW. wtf?

all people say to me is "man step 1 is harder than step 2, what happened? don't worry, you'll get through it on the 2nd time."

and these nbmes aren't really good predictors like they were for step 1 it seems. many of my friends failed nbme 1 and nbme 2 and then passed with scores in the high 70's or low 80's.

Soopa,

Based on UW score. You should have been able to pass, I think. Did you have test anxiety on the test day? Are you going to retake it soon?

I am studying for CK right now. I got 500 in form1. I am not sure if each form is different.

not sure if i have test anxiety. speaking of non-academic issues, not sure if i had any. well i couldn't sleep the night before and got around 3-4 hours of sleep. but doubt that had anything to do with it, my normal adrenaline kicked in by 8 am and i wasn't feeling tired at all til 5 pm.

i'm doing UW again and got 34% left, trying to reinforce all the concepts from each question. i'm taking it on the 27th. you?

If you have them recheck your score could it be possible to go down in your score and them keeping that lower score or do they just change the score if it goes up??
