I need help solving these 2 math problems. Anyone know how to do it?

1. Pt. gets Potassium Chloride 20% 15mL TID. How many milliequivalents of potassium will the patient receive in 1 day? (Potassium chloride MW: 74.5, potassium atomic weight 39)


2. The pharmacist is asked to provide a cyclic rate for a home TPN. The dosage is 2000mL over 12 hours with a titrate up rate of 80 mL/hour for 1 hour and taper-down rate of 40 ml/h for 2 hour. Administration time is 10pm to 10am. What is the calculated rate in mL/hr at 1am rounder to the nearest whole number.

The first one needs some reminders of basic chemistry. Your biggest hang up might just be remembering that the percentage refers to the number of grams per 100 mL. So your 20% solution has 20g KCl/100 mL of water. From there you can set up one of those chemistry calculations where you just go through cancelling out units until you get to where you want.

There are many, many, sites that schools have put up with notes on this kind of stuff as well. I don't do it the same exact way as them, but both ways work out to the same answer.

For the second question, wouldn't you just subtract the volume of the first hour (80 mL) and the last two hours (80 mL) from the total volume (2000 mL) and divide by the remaining hours (9)?

So...

2000 mL - 160 mL = 1840 mL
1840 mL / 9 hrs = 200 mL/hr (rounded)

I don't know if that is correct, but it's how I would do it based on the information given.

20 g / 100 mL = 20000 mg / 100 mL

20000 mg / 100 mL = X mg / 45 mL

X = 9000 mg of KCl

-----------------------------------------------

X / 9000 mg = 39 mg / 74.5 mg

X = 4,711 mg of K+

-----------------------------------------------

4,711 mg / 39 mg/Meq = 120.8 Meq of K+
