Hi Everyone,

This is my first time posting.
I have a particular situation and I thought id give this forum a shot.
Iam a Canadian student from UofT and Iam in my 4th year of study. My cGPA is at a 3.1.
(1st year=1.93
2nd= 2.34
summer with 1.0 courses at= 3.85
3rd year= 3.4
4th year= 3.81
5th year with 2.0 courses= IPR…but iam going to assume a 4.0)

The problem is during my first year I took all the prepharm courses and majority of the marks are in the C- range (chem, math, etc). (I did get diagnosed with a autoimmune disease during that time...i dunno if that really helps)

I have volunteered at hospital pharmacy for 1 year, community pharm for 1 year.

I have done research….3 abstracts published…and that might potentially lead to 2 papers (working in line with the abstracts).
I have done poster presentations in the US. So I can get very good LOF (having worked with these people for the last 2 years).

This year I will also be starting Grad school (getting more publications and increasing my gpa)

I haven't written my PCAT. I have applied to UT pharm..but I know I got rejected considering the average for acceptance is in the +80 cGPA range.

What do you guys think I should do?Do you think grad school will even help at all?

Thanks for your help,
Very Nice!

Hi! i'm from uoft too..i'll try my best to give advice

I don't think going to grad school will help your chances of getting in too dramatically..because your credentials look really good already! Although leslie dan did take in avg A- in previous years there are applicants with B range that have been accepted. If you think you've inputted some pretty good insights into the essay question and have the just the right personality they're looking for you have a good chance!

I'm actually not too concerned with your grades..especially if you are considering also to apply to waterloo, they look highly on grade improvement, community service and research background. Your grades from first year to now have an obvious rising trend, and the admissions committee will be impressed to see that cuz they'll be convinced you'll do well in their pharmacy program. (i don't know if ut looks at trends too..) Plus, your extensive research background is something a lot of applicants don't have (published abstracts! 👍) and i think waterloo likes taking people with a wide range of interests and experiences. Plus, since you've worked in a pharmacy before they'll know that you've researched about the career.

In fact, I think you'll have a really big chance of being admitted to waterloo (i hope you applied this year!). go on to grad school since the decision comes to late anyways..cuz at least you'll still be occupied with something you've already worked on..
hope this helps!

No I havent applied...i didnt think I stood a shot....
what happened to all the malious negative comments?I expected more from a UT student..ahahahahah

as for UT..i think i bombed the iq section..and the essay..was just bs...i put pharmacy facts where they shouldnt have belonged...

Anyways...I cannot stay idel for too long..so its masters as the next step...

What are your stats like?have ypu applied?

But, thanks for your help

retake those classes where you got C- in. especially if they are pre reqs for pharm school.
if you can't take them at the University, then even take them at junior college eh. if you had a bad first year (and had some personal probs) they will take that into account, esp since every year after that, you've improved. it'll be a sign of growth, and they'll favor the grades in the latter years. however, still retake classes where you earned a C-, and get no less than an A-.

I would re-think whether a PHARM D in pharmacy is what you want versus a PhD....Seriously, the PhD would be better for research which is what you seem to like to do.

You can do research with a pharm D, no doubt....but a phd in pharmacy (to the industry) is a better degree for research.

research is 1 thing.....but id rather do pharmacy

I have been doing research to support my application with publications and such...

But i dont think it really helps...

consider that every single school looks only at 1st pre reqz...as a gpa cutoff

Id understand it..if i was a music major or something..ie higher marks.....but when ur in the sciences...they should really be looking at the whole package...perferable last year to last 2 years...

i dunno
