Hey, I am a 17 year old pre-med (sue me..lol) student in my first year of college. I have a speech slur that disables me from correctly pronouncing the "ch", "tr", "sh" sounds as well as words like "ciao" and "bonjour." I can't say the letter G, H, or J. This is a big problem with the foreign language I speak.
When I went to my regular dentist for a cleaning, she told me that my jaw was unaligned. I've had this problem my whole life, but now that I get older, I have become more self-concious to get it fixed, to speak with more confidence. I am especially worried that when time comes to interview for med school, I'll be too busy searching for synonyms of the word I can't say, and that may just make me look weird.
After asking her and doing some research, I realized I need orthagnatic surgery.
And now I have a few questions I thought the dentists here can help me with:
1. What is the success rate for a speech slur like mines to be corrected?
2. How long will I be feeding from a tube or with my jaw wired shut (I am a foreign language minor)?
3. I get frequent headaches, is this a symptom to my condition or not?
4. I plan on consulting the University of Michigan Health System. Does anyone have any recommendations on who may be able to help?
5. How long does the entire correction process, including surgery entail?
6. Do I need to get braces. If I am self concious about that, are there any other options?
7. Any other tips are greatly appreciated. I really need to get this problem fixed. It has seriously silenced me (ironically, like my avatar).
After all of this, I have considered being the type of dentist/doctor that performs this type of operation. It has really inspired me. Is it okay if I plan on medical school now then dental after, or what?
Thanks everyone, and have a Happy New Year!
