I've finally graduated with my BA and the post college world sucks. I'm trying to figure out how I can possibly get into medical school, preferably DO schools. My AMCAS cgpa is a 2.71 and my DO cgpa is a 2.86 with a 3.05 sgpa. I'll be honest my undergrad record sucks! Lots of withdraws and retakes, and I have limited clinical experience. Unfortunately I just wasn't that committed to college when I first started. But oh well there's nothing I can do about that now is there. Anyway I'm thinking of heading back to the good old alma mater to get a second degree in Biology. I can also get some good premed exc's done there and get a few lor's. However I am very unsure about this plan. I did some math and factored in an overly optimistic scenario in which I make 96 hours worth of all A's and my DO gpa only goes up to a 3.37.... The stress and ambiguity is killing me! Is the dream dead? I'd appreciate any advice. I'd love to hear some success stories from people who had similar experiences. I'm worried some heartless adcom is gonna shred my application 🙁

I am too busy right now to write you out a thoughtful response...but search out some of my posts. I grad with a 2.45 and got in after a masters program with 3.75. Your dream isnt dead...it is very possible.

UNT-HSC has a one year master's called Medical Sciences which I just applied to. It's designed to be similar to the first year of medical school and students who do well in it have much higher chances when applying. I'd look into a similar post-bacc program and avoid doing another bachelor's. They want to see you can succeed in graduate coursework. You might consider retaking prereqs, but other than that I wouldn't bother.

As far as mcat goes look into this thread. I never thought I could get a decent mcat score and with SN2ed's guide I raised it 7 points in 3 months. It's not easy but you'll be a machine when you finish. Also look for the Underdog thread for inspiration. There are quite a few good success stories there. If you want in bad enough, you'll get there!

Some people in my class who did master program at my school. They take similar classes as medical student taught by same professor. This way, they can improve their GPA and get letters from the professor who are in the admission committee. They also can waived some of the first year medical school classes after they get in. Do well in MCAT will help you for sure.

The dream is definitely not dead.

You need to focus on a 3 things. 1) Getting as much great experience as possible, start volunteering at hospitals and shadowing doctors especially DOs if thats the route you're interested in. You want the low undergrad grades to be your weakness and everything else to be great so you can convince them to over look the early grades.

2) Do great on the MCAT, but also be smart you may want to wait on the MCAT until you are done with any future classes you might take. And be sure and put in the time studying, a good MCAT will help show that you are smart and know the material just didn't apply yourself in college.

3) Fix your GPA. Post-baccs are great for this, some even give you a foot in the door at their respective schools. As mentioned make sure you're calculating AACOMAs GPA correctly, they actually replace grades rather than average so if you do a full time Post bacc for a year and retake 7 Cs and get A's you can dramatically increase your GPA.

Just remember stick with it!! It took me forever, but I finally got accepted and I'm so happy I put in the work and stuck with it.

Good Luck.
