Hi all

Im any international studying California, my dream is to become a pharmacist. I was thinking to apply pharmacy school after I graduate as biology major, but im thinking to give it a shoot now since I will finish all the pharmacy perquisite by next semester. Im applying to UCSF, but I want to apply additional schools since my GPA is kinda low (3.1).

Because im an international student and I don?t know anything about pharmacy schools out of California, I need some help to decide which pharmacy school I apply to. I need some info about the environment of school campus, academic level, weather (I hate cold weather), and the diversity on campus. I looked on the Pharcas school profiles and im thinking to apply for the following schools:

-University of Washington ( maybe the weather is little cold their !)

-University of Connecticut ( don?t know about the area, but average expected GPA is relatively less competitive)

-Wingate University ( new school)

-Midwestern-Chicago

I don?t know if it?s a good choice of schools. I also want to add another school but im not sure which school should I add. I would appreciate any help about the school info

One good way to start is to look at schools that actually consider International/out of state applicants. I believe PharmCAS has this tabulated on their website. Also call the schools you consider just to be sure.

i visited the school web sites and they accept international students even UW. i didnt find any school that dosent accept international student.

Hi all

weather (I hate cold weather

-University of Washington - (Cold)

-University of Connecticut - Cold (not as cold) usually a 6-year straight from HS.. Don't admit many as professional students

-Wingate University (Warmer, still not CA)

-Midwestern-Chicago (Cold)

Perhaps Midwestern, AZ? It was 115 today, and almost every other day this month.

It was not 115 today....it was barely over 100!

The PharmCAS site says for UW: "Applicants must hold permanent resident visa status to be considered." And, non us citizens are "not considered". I'll e-mail the office and ask what is actually the case.

BTW it hit 105 F on Friday in Olympia, WA! Yikes!

Hey I don't know where you live in AZ but in Peoria it was 113! That's HOT!!!!!!!!!

You are more than welcome to try UConn, but they appear to be most interested in in ste applicants, or at least that the drift I got when I inquired -last year.

On another topic:

So I'm driving to Glendale on next sunday, I don't even know how I'm going to be unloading the truck in that kind of heat.

yes i saw that on Pharmcas their website says that they accept international students with permanent resident. which is funny since international student means that you have a student visa. i think Washington state is better option for me. anyway thanx for the help.

Glendale sounds like a good university, but i dont know ifgood choice for me since their average expected GPA is 3.5. Arizona is a nice place i have been their before, i dont mind the hot weather their, im used to the desert 😀

Washington isn't that COLD.... at least it isn't the kind of extreme cold like it is in the east coast. It does rain a lot though.

You should also look into some of the 3 year programs if you are interested in that. University of Pacific in California has a very good program and it's warm there! I believe Hawaii has one too that was recently started....

Hi!
maxell,

Wingate University is in Wingate, NC it is near Charlotte, NC(the best city in NC).
This is what I have heard from people who visited their campus, they say the campus is smaller than the High School campus. It is private university. They just opened last year or so. I don't know more about it, coz I am not gonna apply there.

I hope this helps!

Hi all

-University of Washington
I used to live in Woodinville, WA weather was perfect for me except rain.

-University of Connecticut
only 6 year as far as i remember, but they switch to 4 year professional only.

-Wingate University
no idea

-Midwestern-Chicago
chicago's winter is unbeable. i would never want to be in chicago during winter.

generally private schools are more lenient toward international students. but in most cases it is very hard to get in as an international student. i just hope that you will get in someplace. good luck. where u from anyway?

I'm from the southwest, so anything less than 70 degress is COLD to me! I remember going up to San Francisco one August, and it was 62 degrees, IN AUGUST, and I couldn't believe it! I was the only one walking around wearing a hoodie over my head and shivering like I was about to die. 😳 It's usually over 100 where I'm from.

I agree with what everybody else has said about Chicago - if you don't like cold weather, you will be miserable there! Seattle's kinda iffy. I was there last May and even though the temperature wasn't that low, it felt a lot colder due to the rain.

A list of all the pharmacy schools in the US and their website addresses can be found here: http://www.aacp.org/issi/membership/us school list.pdf

I'm in Glendale and it wasn't that hot...only like 105. I don't know how it varied that much by basically crossing the street from Glendale to Peoria! That's odd...but that's the weather out here. It'll be like 120 in one city and the city next to it will only be like 10-15 degrees cooler.

Hi Maxell,
I was an international student when I applied and though I got in it was a tough sell. I applied to a state school which was the trouble. I assured them that I have a very strong chance of having my permanent residency approved(aka. green card). I was also not on the F1 student visa most international students are on.
Try to apply to more private schools because they won't mind your in or out of state status. As the competition increases it gets more and more difficult for int students to get accepted.
Good luck

It was supposedly 102 according to the online weather, but it sure felt hotter than that! :wow:

The academic advisor in my college told me that state universities and public universities prefer international student, since they dont have to worry about financial aid packages and because simply we pay higher tuition, especially after the budget cuts. but it dosent make a difference for a privet college because every one pays the same, resident and non-resident. but this is the case in California, i dont know if its different on other states.

I can sympathize. Living in Memphis, where winters are colder than heck and summers are hotter than hot, we at least had seasons. So when I moved to FL and people were telling me that when the temp drops below 70 the winter coats are brought out, I died laughing. But I soon learned that when the temp is usually 80+ almost all year, 70 degrees feels COLD! So yes, I also freeze when the temp falls below 70 degrees.

if you don't live cold weather, try applying to NV? i heard a new school opened near LV. not exactly sure tho....

but definitely do not apply to chicago,... all my friends out there for med school hate the cold weather! good luck!
