i was wondering where i could find the best (last for a long time and good quality) and cheapest loupes out there. thanx folks.

I have Designs for vision and i love them. However do a search when it starts working again cause there have been some great threads on loupes.

get them from those reps showing up at dental school. If you're in military service, you may get reimbursement.

I have Designs for Vision....I didn't start using them till second year, so after all my pre-clinic restorative classes. I started using them in fixed, and man I didn't know what I was missing! I love them. If you can afford them get them as soon as you can! Mine are the in frames type. A few classmates have the flip down ones and cannot stand them. So, try them out for awhile and see what you like best.

I have two pairs. I have Orascoptic 2.5X (in the lens) and Zeiss prismatic 4.5X. I've used the Zeiss twice. I bought the Orascoptics first, and thought the Zeiss would be better. I love the Orascoptics. They are very light. I got the extra small lenses, and they adapt very well to my face. I paid $750 for the Orascoptics and $1300 for the Zeiss. I'll probably use the Zeiss later for surgeries, but the Orascoptics are great for fixed and operative. Great for the money. Those prices are after the hefty discounts given by the reps. Don't buy no names. It's an investment.

Designs for Vision... almost all the dentists I have observed in private practice use them, and they were originally designed for surgeons (intricate, life-saving surgeons...). I got my 2.5x, Titanium frames (very lightweight) for $850, and they even gave me a payment plan (3 payments of ~$250 each). My friends bought the 3.5x for $1025. They have a 45-day free trial (no obligation) and if you want to bump to a higher magnification, they will do it for only the cost of the difference in magnification! Also, the frames have a lifetime warranty. Even if you roll over them with your car, they will replace the frames because it will be considered a manufacturers' defect 🙂

I notice that a lot of people on clinic who have other loupes, or no loupes at all - (Orascoptic, Sheervision, Surgitel, and especially the flip-ups... this is just what I've noticed, I'm sorry if you're a dedicated user of those brands, no offense meant!) are all scrunched over on their patients, all up in their faces getting spit and blood all over them ... which is disgusting in and of itself 😱, but worse is that eventually their backs will need tweaking and practicing dentistry will be pretty tough for 'em!! The majority of the ones who wear DFV, though, have good posture (which, gasp, is the purpose of owning the stupid things lol).

And no... I don't get any compensation from the company, I just really love my loupes!! 🙄

One more thing (sorry, everybody who thinks I'm insane for pushing DFV all the way🙂)... about longevity - my mom and dad have both had the same pair of DFV loupes for almost 20 years with no changes necessary... my dad got new frames a few years ago to upgrade from the old school ones 🙂

And speaking of the old school frames... one of my friends chose those and she told me why: "I wanted to look like Superman." 😎

if someone is scrunched up close to his patient, his working distance is off... it has nothing to do with the brand (unless the brand does not offer various working distances or the salesman doesn't know how to measure WD).

My point (exactly- you nailed it right on) *was* that these various brands *don't* measure your personal working distance, or they *do* measure them wrong, and thus... you get all scrunched over.

I use oroscoptic 4X. They let me sit straight aand keep my arms and hands down just above waiste level. At that length I can see about 5 teeth.

The other poster is right the whole point is so that you can sit straight without bending over.

I 've been looking a while for some guy who had the good opportunity to compare Zeis prismatic loupe with the regular Gallilean (TTL orascoptic, or similar...). Please what is the difference in clarity of the field with both of them as compared in the same amount of light. I read a lot of talking about the larger field of view, less neck strain, Flip-up probs ....bla bla bla....😴 😴 Frankly I am only interested in knowing a precise comparison as regrad to the "QUALITY" of vision 😎 .
In my country there is only Zeiss , Heine and Keeler products (no DFV, Orascoptics, so I had no chance for trying them). I've only choose to try Zeiss for its reputation and I tried the Head band mount prismatic 3.5X with flip-up which was very fine and very large field of view (more than 8 cm!). However it is very expensive, so if the "clarity and QUALITY of field is comparable to the prismatic Zeiss then I can manage to have eye test and order the DFV from europe and save a lot of money. 😉

I'm torn between Orascoptics and DFV. Any comment on whether the round lens that Oro offers is better? Or is it good to have the smaller, lower ones of the DFV and have more regular lens to look through above it? (this would be for TTL)

I have Designs 2.5x - and they're perfect. A number of my classmates don't even use the ones they bought 1st year. If you're not sure just buy them all!
Serously, you can return them within 90 days.😀....

I have orascopics and I realy love them. I tried some DFV but they didn't fit my face as well. I have a lot of friends with DFV and they all love them also. Get the ones that fit your head better and I think you will be happy with them.

I think that the best loupes are Orascoptic 2.9x magnification through the lens.

I tried to save some money and went with Sheervisions light and loupes. I had an unbelievably long, costly and unpleasant experience dealing with them and their faulty light.

In my opinion Sheervision is fraudulent and I do not recommend buying from them.

Any loupes are better than no loupes. Higher magnification is better than lower magnification. The MAIN cause of dentists scrunching over when using "other" brands is because they're NOT LOOKING THROUGH THE LOUPES! Honestly you can't get to 6 inches of someone's face and see clearly through the loupes... it's not in focus. They're usually looking above them. The second most common cause is because the reps are HORRIBLE at working distances. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY CLASSMATES had the wrong working distance.

When you're ready to REALLY move up, invest in a microscope!

you have to make a choice as to what kind of loupes you are looking for either through the lens, or galileans style, or keperlerian prism loupes. i have shown people this website and have not heard any complaints yet also if you check the mentor forum you will see i pointed out a thread where you can find all types of loupes. The prices are much lower and dental loupes are becoming a commodity in my opinion so i don't see the need to spend thousands on them. anyways you can check out the company's dental loupes here. best of luck!

I have 3.5x expanded field keplerian DFV loupes and I love them so much, though they were fairly expensive. With the EF loupes my field is wider than the people who stuck with 2.5x normal lenses, and I'm seriously considering kicking it up to 4.5x EF.

look into heine loupes, they are used by many of optometry schools and I think they would know something about lenses and vision. I have them and love them. I tried orascoptic, surgitel, designs, peroptix, sheervision, etc. and non of them came close to the clarity and amount of light that the heine loupes let in. it's got a wide working distance and the viewing field is huge, which is a big plus. love them.

We just had some vendors come to our school for the "loupes fair". I am going with DFV. I absolutely loved them... and it doesn't hurt to know that they will last for a long time. The vendor said everywhere he goes, conventions, seminars, etc... people ask him how they can stay in business. And that is because everyone who owns them has had them for 20+ years. My dad has had the original DFV loupes 2.5x for about 25 years and they are still as good as new. The one thing that I can say about the DFV 2.5x is that the telescopes are square (not round) so your field of vision will be slightly wider (and better), especially when you are first adjusting to them and learning how to use them. I personally do not like the flip-up loupes... they feel heavier on my nose, and I am not a big proponent on sport frames. I hear they fall apart easier. The other thing I liked abut DFV is that your first prescription upgrade is free. So, if you ever need a prescription change or if you have good vision now and end up needing glasses down the road, DFV will put the first prescription change in the lenses for free. Also... if you really like the "sport" frame, DFV does is teaming up with Nike to release their first ever "sport" frame. It's not like the Oakley frames though. It is a Titanium "designer-looking" frame. Also, DFV does not make flip-ups.

hey toothfairy, it sounds almost like you work for DFV! but really, we have a rep coming tomorrow from DFV and i'll probably be buying from them. they seem to have their stuff together and really want to make you (the customer) happy.
we had a lady from orascoptix (spelling?) come to sell us some stuff and she was an absolute nutcase! if you've ever seen The Office and know who Angela is then you know exactly what this woman looked and acted like. all she did was degrade all the other company reps we had talked to and told us how her products are the best because she said so and they never broke because she said so and they were all perfectly 2.5x because she said so, etc etc. it was hilarious but very sad b/c half of my class wanted to buy her loupes but decided not to b/c of her attitude.
