got accepted to 5 schools and these are the only ones I am really considering.....

please give me some insight on which to choose-

my important criteria aside from the curriculum, (which were all superb)

location
nightlife(i am single)
rotation setup
residency placement

At this point I have a real interest in emergency medicine...
thanks, other people just don't understand

based on ur factors:
location - so freakin hoooot all the time.. azcom is out unless you love to gamble
nightlife(i am single) - lecom is out for sure..
rotation setup
residency placement

final decision: i would go with ccom.

That's a really really tough decision! That's all I have to say.

1. Location: Erie, PA is nice, and close to Pittsburgh, but both CCOM and AZCOM have a big advantage.

2. Nightlife: Chicago has everything. Glendale is basically Phoenix, which also has everything. Erie can't hold a candle here.

3. Rotation setup: not sure. I like the way LECOM sets up their 3rd and 4th years, and there are plenty of hospitals in pitt and philly, among other places. But I think the other two also have some great affiliations.

4. Residency placement: the school won't place you into a residency. You do this yourself. It won't matter where you go. If you're smart enough, and you work hard enough, an EM residency will be waiting for you after med school.

I should add: if nightlife is really a priority, maybe you should go to the place with the worst nightlife so you are less tempted to go out a lot.

very very good points..

1 more thing.. is it worth the 13,000 more per year to attend AZCOM or CCOM vs. LECOM

damn this is very difficult

 Good idea!

13,000 more per year based upon an alloted budget covering all living expenses, tuition, books, insurance, etc...

Which pathway were you accepted for at Erie?

is ur future gf/wife worth more than 14k a year? 😉

on a more serious note,
- if you're serious about getting a relationship and having some fun, i'd go for ccom (imo, 14k is worth it for the reason above!)
- if you just want a good education and get the into a good residency without so much fun, lecom is the way

PBL...

but to be honest I think I will switch back to LD-

I am just nervous about switching over to a new uncoventional style

why do you ask that?

I don't understand the whole girlfriend question

u say ur single.. so u'll have a better shot at a nice fiance at ccom rather than lecom (ccom is worth 13k more right? and it has a possible future fiance next to it)

If I were accepted to PBL at Erie I would choose it over AZCOM and CCOM. That's because I really think PBL would be great. AZCOM and CCOM both seem like great schools but it would be hard to reconcile the financial cost. However, if you don't have that much student loan debt now I think it's worth it to go to whichever school you like the most.

also, it really depends on you!

i don't know what you like or what you hate. some people NEED to have fun to think properly. it just may be tougher if you go to lecom if you're one of them.

I see you're from Utah. Would you prefer to stay out west?

I want to have fun!!

studying is very important to me but I am one of those people who likes to go out and play

as far as student debt goes from undergrad I have racked up an insignificant 3,500 in staffords

utah has been nice... I kinda want something different though as I sometimes feel out of place here w/ the politics, religion etc.

u only have a once in a lifetime experience at med school.. i think the experience to have fun and work hard would be priceless > 13k. and seriously, you're much better off than a lot of other undergrads that have up to 100k in debts (esp. those that went to private colleges).

i agree......

Wow! I'm jealous! Well taking everything into account that you've said, I would choose CCOM with AZCOM coming in a very close second.

Yeah, it also sounds like CCOM is what you're looking for, mjmorphet. I hear it's only 25 minutes from Chicago, so you definitely have the advantage of nightlife 🙂

Chicago is crazy fun...

last time I was there I met a girl and took a train up to wrigleyville to have a few beers... then I was interviewed by the today show for being a cubs fan.. strange

the irony of it was that the cubs were out of town so I got whitesox tix for the next night

no love for phoenix though?

I visited Phoenix once and I loved it! However, I'm from Illinois and I still think there's no place quite like Chicago. I'm not that well traveled though so take that into consideration. If I were choosing between AZCOM and CCOM it would be tough but might lean more towards AZCOM because it seems more family friendly which obviously isn't a consideration for you. Overall it sounds like you would be much happier at CCOM or AZCOM vs. LECOM-Erie.

If I was younger and not as concerned about the money, CCOM would be my pick. I know there are a lot of AZCOM fans here, but I have my concerns about the rapid growth and the clerkships. CCOM has a good established history of clinicals, and you have other hospitals around you can do auditions, research projects, etc.

you won't feel outa place at AZCOM, so its not really about staying out west, its Utah... if you get outa there, your good to go (no offense to anyone that lives there....😉)

as far as the others go:

location: AZCOM... hello! who wants to wake up to freezing temps and have to go to class? going to class in 70-80 in the winter sounds much nicer to me!

nightlife(i am single): Chicago probably has a slightly better feel for nightlife... BUT, glendale/phoenix/scottsdale/tempe are all great places, I've been here for many years and am not bored yet... plus there are quite a few awesome places being built up nearby. Also, if you are in chicago, tht is it... in AZ, you are close enough for a weekend trip to vegas, san diego or l.a. (IF you have the time lol)... and again, the freezing temps concern me, I feel like the nightlife not be so much fun when it is so cold outside!!!

rotation setup: honestly, I think rotation set up is what you make of it...there might be more established rotations at CCOM and LECOM, but that does not necessarily mean they are better.

residency placement: Same thing, your residency placement has a bit to do with the school you go to and where you get your rotations etc..., it also has a lot to do with what you are interested in going into, your own performance in school (regardless of the school), your own scores on the boards, your own investigation into where you'd like to do your residency etc..., I am sure if you have a clear cut idea of where/what you want to do for a residency and you do what YOU need to do to get there then you should be fine.
