My family are not at all supportive for me through this cycle, i do not blame them btw. I just got really sad when i got reject from every single school, i only got 2 interview invites. My family always compare me to all the cousins and they even told me i am not smart enough to be a dentist🙁
My friends are packing ready to med school and i am the only person left behind!

I am now prepare for the next cycle. I will be taking DAT again. But do you guys think it is my reading score that hindered me from getting interview?
What can i do to make myself a strong applicant again?

Thanks!

p.s: i applied to 16 schools

Your predents says you only applied to 2 schools. Am I missing something? Two applications and two interviews is pretty good...

hey ucla2134! with a 13 qr and 15 reading u still got 2 interviews!!!! 👍 imagine how many more interviews you'll get when you retake the dat and reach ur goal of aa20 ts22! and if you get into UoP next cycle, you'll graduate with your friends still 😛 cheer up! 😛 good luck on ur dat! :luck:

hey, i'm sorry that ur parents/family are so unsupportive..it makes u feel more crappy than u are now..and it's becuz they don't understand the difficulty getting into med/dental school is now adays. put that aside and remember that U've made it this far and not many people can..ucla graduate with a great gpa..that's tough! so give urself some credit.

as for reapplying, u need to go out to barnes n nobles/ amazon.com and buy allllll the books that u need. that was my motivation to restudy because u have all the sources u need...so no excuses.
*so re-evaluate the sources u used...did u only use one? did u take enough practice tests? etc etc.

as a reapplicant, i looked at my weakest scores and started studying again around this time for that subject..for me it was the sciences (mostly bio). and went from there. took dat august 2008 and my scores drastically improved..and i credit the sources i used and fully understanding what i read! not just read the words just to say i "covered that topic"
* so give urself lots of time to study, months i say! and get ur application in ASAP! i waited too long and most of my interviews were second cycle (post Dec 1)..
*as for your RC, yeah it is way way too low! u need at least an 18 to be ok, 20 to be safe...
*and for ur math, many schools have a cut-off score so 13 is really bad.. if u can get it to 14 u should be fine haha. that's what i got and NO one asked me about my math..=)

anyway, sorry for the long post, i TRULY understand how u feel..i was in the same boat last year (only one interview)...so, if u need sources, u can pm me, i live in LA so i could meet u somewhere and sell it to u...good luck !!

wow i totally feel u...i know what uve been goin through...when i read ur post i felt i was in ur shoes...just stay positive and hang in there...i think i saw that u had low scores on some parts of the DAT..if u can raise it then ull be in good shape for the next yr as long as u have a solid gpa...believe in urself...i almost gave up on myself, but i hung in there and prevailed...if ya need to talk send me a PM..good luck

The day that YOU stop comparing yourself to others is the day you're gonna win. You're your own person with your own story and background, specifically dedicated to you and your life, be yourself and you'll get noticed if not this year, next, if not next, 4 years down the road.
Parents will always be parent. It is in their nature to compare you. Even if you get into Harvard, they WILL compare you to someone who got the Nobel Prize, for example.,, well, you get the idea.

you need to make it your nature, not to take it the wrong way...

good luck

agreed!!! couldn't have said it any better..

speaking of which..ddslaguy, i remember ur thread from the horrible experience u had at the Prometric DAT exam place... are u planning on attending anywhere this cycle?

Prioratize your DAT from now on and aim for 18s+. If you reach that target im sure youll be fine for next cycle.

got reject from 14 schools, it is really not good

I didnt get accepted last cycle, and my family kept telling me that people are moving and I am not. I applied this cycle for 09 class, and got rejected from almost 15 schools, I interviewed in one school, and the Director of Admissions told me those words " Its your future, dont let anyone put you down, have faith, you will be there soon" then thank God I got accepted last week to my top choice, UDM, and the Director of Admissions her name is Karin La-Rose, changed my view of this whol parent thing, if you apply there make sure you talk to her, she is the best. If it wasnt for my parents I dont have a problem waiting a year to do masters, but I feel you. Just focus on the DAT, and you will get there, ignore you parents in a nice way.
Good luck!

WE can both do it, my advice is retake the DAT and apply to way more schools

Why only 14 Schools... I know money is an issue but applying to fewer schools and having to do a whole year extra is worth the up front cash.

Good luck and we can both do it!

keep your head up, buddy..

I applied 18 schools for 2008 cycle and did not get a single interview.
I knew my DAT score(SA 18 AA 17)was the only thing held me back so i retook (SA 21 AA20) for 2009 cycle and got into my #1 choice, Tufts..
When i looked at your score, you just need to improve your quantitative reasoning and reading session, you need to get at least 17 on each part.
your GPA looks great..
make sure you retake your DAT and apply early this time.
I know you can do it and don't let anybody tells you what you can or can not do...
good luck..:luck:

Yea you probably know yourself you have lower end scores, such as the 13. Just retake and do better- guranteed some pre-Dec 1 acceptances

Parents say this because they don't understand how competitive the application process is. It is very hard and you should be proud of yourself that you have reached upto this point and is motivated to succeed. Don't let your parents's sayings/ comparisons discourage you, try to make them understand that it is also hard for you: they should be more supportive especially during this time. Def re take DAT and in this year you can work, do more volunteer and save money for your dental school. The main thing is to stay positive and determined. Please don't let anyone discourage you. Face this situation bravely. You'll see that a few years from now on you will be giving the same advice to someone who's facing a similar situation like yours. You had the interviews so you already know what to expect during the interviews, just study for a couple months to take your DAT and you should be FINE. Good luck!

I know what it feels like to be treated as the black sheep by parents. The truth is, they're just insecure about themselves, thus they need to find a scapegoat. Just ignore their negativity and live your life for YOU.

Failures and set backs are inevitable in life. What defines us is not how many times we fail, but how many times we get back up and perceiver. I know you got it in YOU!

Tips: your main problem is your QR score. It needs to be above 15. Just buy the Crack the DAT math...there's plenty of practice problems to help raise your score. As for RC, use the search and destroy method. Your science total is pretty good. Since you did get some interviews, it's pretty safe to assume that your application and letter of rec are good to go. Apply early. If you can raise those 2 scores, there's no need to apply to more than 15 schools...unless money is not an issue.

Good luck and have faith!

Why do we fall Master Wayne?.............(someone finish it)

there must be a lesion in the circuit between the eighth cranial nerve nucleus and the flocculondulus of the cerebellum and the fastigial nucleus.

i love midterms 😀

keep your head up! i didn't get accepted the first time i applied, and my parents were disappointed also. i didn't let it get me down though. they honestly don't realize how hard it is to get into a professional school! your gpa is great, but yeah i think you need to retake the DAT to get your RC and QR score up. i think the only reason you didn't get many interviews is because your RC or QR score didn't pass the cut-offs. so just retake the DAT and get 19-20s across the board, and you'll be golden!

Thank you guys for all the support. It is 8 am and i am now practice verbal reasoning MCAT and i wish i knew this before taking the test.
What would i do without SDN?

You have great GPA and sGPA, just raise your QR and RC scores. You are already practicing for the RC. On the QR, use the DAT destroyer. The math is not hard, just not a whole lot of time for that section. There are only a few problem types on the DAT. Find them! The method for solving each type are normally the same (only the numbers are different). You'll be fine! Good Luck! Don't let your friends and parents get you down!
