i just got my results today from the pharm tech cert board exam and passed. does that mean i'm a certified tech and can practice as a certified tech? i was asking my coworkers about it. a lot were unsure what they meant because the pharm techs at my work went to pharm tech school and got a license after finishing schooling. is there a difference to being a pharm tech and a licensed certified tech? i went to the ptcb but cant really find a faq page and anything else. thanks.

Hi!
iamhungry,

I think a Pharm Tech License is the license that people get from their State Board of Pharmacy. The license from the State board allows them to work as a Pharmacy Tech in that particular state. A Person must register in their state board of pharmacy after he/she get the first job as a Pharm Tech(their first Employer register them with the State Board, that way they get the license). Without registering with the Board they cannot work as a Tech in the Pharmacy.

The other license from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board(PTCB) allows a Pharm Tech to get about ($.50-$1.00) extra money per hour. A person gets jobs easily if he/she is certified by PTCB. If you've ever read the job description for the Hospital Pharmacy Technician, they always say in their that "Certified Pharmacy Technicians prefered", that means they hire certified Techs are more valuable than those that are not-certified.

This is just my opinion, these things could be slightly different in each states.

CONGRATS!!! on being PTCB certified.

Congrats! I'm considering that exam too, can I ask you what prep materials you used?
(BTW, I've already taken a Pharmacy Calculation class..)

One thing to watch out for is that the PTCB is usually ALL retail or ALL hospital. It's amazing to see that hospital techs can deal well with the retail questions but the retail aren't able to deal with the hospital questions. Just an observation.

I'm a retail tech and have 7 years of experience working retail. I took the exam and it was "ALL Hospital" questions. I passed and it wasn't hard. Retail tech's and Hospital tech's have no variance in how well they do on the exam. If you study a little you'll do fine, it also helps to have some experience; hospital or retail, it makes no difference.

The Mosby's book (available used on 'Zon) is the best resource by far.

I notice there are 2 Mosby's books on Amazon.
Mosby's Pharmacy Technician: Principles and Practice by Teresa Hopper CPhT (Paperback - Jan 18, 2011)

Mosby's Review for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination by James J. Mizner (Paperback - Apr 16, 2009)

Which one do you recommend?

The second one looks good though it is 2 years old.

I was leaning towards the 2nd one because it's a lot cheaper but I don't know if the material changes annually. Most prep books have the same info year to year, sure they may change a word and add a couple figures, but I don't think it justifies the $20 addition to the price.

👍

I've been a tech for over 4 years and I don't think anything has really changed for us. The 2 year old book should be fine.

I just want to throw in this website as well:

The questions are pretty helpful and should supplement the Mosby book. Hope this helps!
