Hi, I’m on my second year of undergraduate. I had a tough time on my first year of undergraduate school due to a really personal matter that affected me deeply. At that time, I wasn’t truly decided of my pathway which made me feel kinda lost of what I really want. But, now I feel prepared and determined to pursue my dream to became a doctor (Family Medicine Physician or OG). On my second year, I started to take all A’s on most of my clases and retake some clases ( Chem, Calculus 1, Bio) but I got a B-, B- and A+. My current GPA (3.3) isn’t that good even with the classes I retook previously. I’m currently working on take more science classes and get all A’s. And I’m doing volunteering and some other extracurricular activities. What should I do to improve more my chances to get into MD schools? If you have other suggestions I’ll be happy to heard it! I need help!

So if you really want to do Family Medicibe, the good news is that American med students don’t want to match Family,so you can go to a bottom of the barrel school and still match.

But practical advice- start using Anki. Do it. I don’t really care if you like it or not. I’ve never met a student who said it didn’t improve their grades if they sincerely did it for several weeks.

For your math and physics classes, you just have to grind. Go do tons of practice problems. I joked Freshman year that calculus was my girlfriend because I’d be doing math problems in the student union on a Friday night.

Go to office hours. Go to tutoring. Ask for help.

And finally,…. You just might not be working hard enough. I get up on a Saturday and study for normally 12-15 hours. I know people who are geniuses who didn’t study hard and got into med school, but if you’re a mere mortal like myself, the only answer is to grind endlessly and intelligently.

But honestly at this point MD is probably not going to happen. But if you improve your performance and nail the MCAT you can still get into a DO school somewhere. And if you’re interested in primary care that’s completely fine.

There are some MD pipeline programs for people who want to do primary care as well if you’re in the SE

Maintain a rising GPA trend.

Develop good coping skills and the ability to compartmentalize.

Always go to office hours if you're having any difficulties with the material.

Seek out your school's learning or education center to find your best ways to study, take exams, manage your time, Etc

Drop most of your extracurriculars (maybe keep 1 if it is low commitment and gives you a social group). Your priority should be working on improving your grades.
