I misunderstood the instructions on an assignment for an online course that I am taking and got a 30/50 out of it. Granted it's only a fraction of my overall grade but it is still a 60 and the teacher is not letting me make it up in any way. I asked her if I could redo it to try to get a 40/50 but she said no, so I do not know what to do. This dumb assignment could totally F up my GPA!!! Should I ask her for some extra credit or something or like what?! I have never had this problem before.

First, it's not the assignment's fault. Get over that thought quickly.

How much of a fraction of your overall grade is it? If it doesn't carry much weight, I wouldn't worry about it. Plenty of people bomb one thing or another in a course and still wind up doing very well by the time they are finished.

And even if you don't do well in the course you probably would be better off not asking for extra credit. After observing plenty of people trying to get points back, I can say pretty confidently that profs really don't care for it. When you bomb an assignment, you just have to study harder for the next test.

How far along are you in your undergraduate education? A single course is very unlikely to be the end of your medical school prospects; everyone makes mistakes from time to time.

It's one assignment. I know that sometimes it's hard to get over a bad grade, but the only thing you can do now is do better next time. It was in the past, don't worry about it.

Just do well on the rest of the assignments. I accidently slept past the deadline for a fairly sizable online assignent this semester, but i've done well on everything else so i'm back at an A.

It's just totally dumb because the class is an easy 4.0, you read the powerpoints and the book and then take the online quizes and do the assignments. This assignment could have bumped me down to like a 3.3 now.

I am not worried about not getting into med school over it, I just feel like the fact that I misunderstood what I needed to do can totally screw me out of an awesome grade.

EDIT: My up to date grade literally went down from like a 3.7 to a 3.0 with this assignment. If I get a perfect score on the remainder of the assignments I am lucky if I pull a 3.3.

Live and learn. It sounds like you've done what you can to try to get points back. A B+ won't exactly shatter your overall GPA, you know.

doing... my... best... to... not... roll... eyes.

what you do after a mistake says more about your character than how you handle successes.

also, 🙄

Everybody makes mistakes along the way and has survived despite not being allowed to make up the assignment. I got a 62 in a group project worth 30% of my grade in the introductory class for my major (biomedical engineering) and so got a B in the class. But I finished college with just over a 3.8 and you know what? I'm in med school now. No interviewer questioned my B in introductory biomedical engineering, my B in organic chem I, or my B in organic chem lab II. Nor did they question the variety of B+s that also inhabited my transcript.

You clearly aren't meant for med school. i would just quit now. if you mess up once on a ONLINE class assignment think of the mistakes you could make on a patient. and no, there is no extra credit when you kill a patient.

where do you go that ONE assignment will mess up your GPA??

One time I got 42% on a midterm.. and beat class average! hahaha

everything is usually curved anyway right? so it doesn't matter how poorly you did, so long as you did better than everyone else.

this cant be a serious question. please tell me ur joking. if u ARE serious, 1) theres no harm in asking for extra credit, 2) what the hell could anyone here even do for u. if ur professor wont allow u to make it up then ur kinda stuck with it aint ya? and ive failed an orgo test before and still got an A in the course.

Let me see here, YOU "misunderstood" the instructions for an assignment and now the assignment is "dumb"? If you make a mistake, the professor is supposed to allow you to have "extra credit" to make up for YOUR mistake? It's called living with the consequences of your mistake.

If you are seriously considering a career in medicine, you are not going to find any "do-overs" out there. Study harder, learn from your mistake and lose the "it was a dumb assignment" because you made the mistake. Now that you have gone through this, thank that professor for the experience.

Jesus F christ some of you people are ridiculous. I came here because I thought maybe others would have some advice and been in the same situation as me. I am clearly not happy with my grade and I know for a fact that if I would have just have added some pictures, borders, graphs and a cover page to the word document I submitted I would have gotten at least a 45/50. I didn't create the Word Document the way the teacher wanted it so I got 20 points off which I think is a little excessive and the prof even told me my info was great but I didn't make a stupid magazine article out of it so I got a 30/50. There's not many point available to get in the class so that 20 points could be quite important.

A simple, no there's nothing you could do about it would have sufficed but instead half of you are just telling me "oh your an idiot", "if you want to be in medicine blah blah blah". I just wanted some advice if there was anything I could do or suggest doing or anything like that. I don't need a bunch of fools behind a computer with dumb avatars telling me how ridiculous I am.

You're ridiculous. I hope this is a troll. And lol at you taking an easy 4.0 class and only pulling a 3.3

You should have your mommy call the dean.

Not to get on your case...but you didn't follow the professor's instructions, and she still gave you a passing score. Be happy that she didn't give you a zero. Sometimes life sucks, but you've just got to roll with it and learn from your mistakes. Good luck the remainder of the semester.

Prepare to jump through many more hoops before you get to start dictating which hoops are the ones that get jumped through.

Best to take this as a life lesson. You probably aren't getting those 15 points back so go ahead and make sure you don't miss points for stuff like that in the future.

A 60% on one assignment is absolutely nothing to freak out about.

If the assignment carried a big weight, make an appointment with the professor to discuss where things went wrong.

Be prepared to put some work into the class...but I have had classes where I scored a C on an exam, and still pulled an A in the class by putting in a lot of work on all future assignments and exams. As long as the assignment wasn't half your grade, it should be possible for you to do well.

A low score on an assignment happens to most people at some point in their academic career. Don't obssess over the past, and focus on how you can improve.

Hi, welcome to university.

Things that are entirely your responsibility:
1) finding out what the professor expects of you
2) meeting those expectations
