I was told "I was ranked to match", but they're not my #1

Hi everyone

Ill start with stating I am an IMG, so matching is 50/50.

I have had some interviews and they largely went well, and now the Email flirting has begun. The program I intend to rank #3 emailed and stated I am 'ranked to match'. I know there is a bit of controversy regarding what exactly that means, but lets assume if I ranked this program #1 I would match there for sure.

Now suppose in the same scenario, I leave this program at #3, but my top two picks didn't want me. Would it still be 'certain' that I would match at my #3 now that I did not put them as my top pick on the ROL?

Thanks

Given the conditions you set in your scenario, yes. But as you mentioned, the phrase "ranked to match" is nebulous and your conditions may not be true in reality. A program with 10 slots may consider anyone ranked 1-50 as "ranked to match" if they historically go down that far on their rank list in order to fill. So rank programs based on your preference and ignore the flirting.

No applicant ranked lower by the program can take your spot, unless you match at a higher choice.

This (wo?)man is right.

Also, flirting is meaningless until they buy you dinner (on July 1st).

Yeah, rank programs how you like them and never believe any of the love notes. Also, be careful of programs that lie to applicants in terms of "actual" hrs worked, happy residents, etc. If your gut tells you things did not seem right at a place listen to it.

Rank your choices in your order of preference. DO NOT believe anything they say about ranking to match. You'd be the thousandth person I know who got burned if you did. They say it to EVERYONE (not to burst your bubble), and the reality is they do it to try to make sure THEY fill, it has NOTHING to do with you. NEVER rank a program based on what they're telling you, always go with your gut, and NEVER suicide rank!

Rank where you want to be and ignore all love letters. The streets are littered with residents who were sure they would match at the program they got a lover letter from and then ended up at their number 3 or 4.

Just curious cuz I have similar step 1 score, did you end up matching?

Thanks
