Hi all!

I have a quick question. I have an IA (relatively minor residence hall conduct violation) from my freshman year of college. I had the incident expunged from my record and based on the the new AMCAS guidelines (which state you may "answer No if the action was deleted, expunged, or otherwise removed from your record by the institution) I do not have it included on my primary. I did confirm that this seemed appropriate based on the guidelines with my student conduct office director before submitting my primary, when they expunged the violation.

For secondaries that ask about IA's -- I should still report the incident, correct? The secondary I have received so far does ask for individuals to disclose any violations. There is no language surrounding expunged versus not expunged in the secondary, and I want to make sure I am remaining honest and providing schools with the information they request. Of course, I will mention the incident was expunged in my explanation. Just wanted to know how others may be handling these cases given the new AMCAS IA policy.

Thanks!

Individual school policy is different than AMCAS policy so you would have to read their individual rules.

You should ask your student conduct office director what IAs are on record and how they recommend you report them.

I would not just assume that you are required to report this expunged infraction. Because the AMCAS policy changed so recently, I believe that many medical schools have simply not caught up yet. I'd ask at your pre-health office and also at all of your medical schools- anonymously. There is a difference between applying correctly and with integrity following all the rules that are in place and unnecessarily shooting yourself in the foot by reporting an incident that AMCAS itself is saying should not be reported. Don't NOT report where it is required. But equally important is not to report where it is not required.
