so everyone..i got an alcohol violation sophomore year for being at a party...my school was contacted but the violation didn't go on my disciplinary record..all i had to do is write a paper and that's it...

my school said i dont have to disclose this incident if i don't want to because they don't consider it an official action..so should i disclose it or not?

I would mark "no." If it's not on your record, it will not come back to haunt you. Mentioning it could only hurt you, in this case.

don't you still have to report it if its not on your record?

It sounds like the school is trying to protect students who make a minor mistake (if you'll pardon the pun) and make amends. Some schools send students to the infirmary to sober up with the same effect: no disciplinary record. Go and sin no more. 😉

So even though I was found violating the student code of conduct and wrote an essay about my actions instead of going to the campus disciplinary/judicial system I could safely answer "no" to the insituitonal action question? Also, what about conduct violation questions in the secondaries - what should I answer? The office of student conduct told me i could answer "no" to the IA question and that my dean's certificate says I'm in good standing with the school. Maybe, Im just being paranoid but I dont want to have an acceptance revoked over something small like this..

LizzyM I have seen you say "writing an essay" or "taking a class" for alcohol is considered institutional action? Why is my situation different? Is it cause I was told i would not have a record if I didn't violate the honor code again or what?

I think we told you your answer.
Go. Run away. Be free.

Some people are assigned "write an essay" or "take a class" after going through the campus judicial process. That is the "institutional action" taken after their violation of a campus rule is adjudicated. Now, some schools know that this type of adjudication can really mess up students' futures and they don't want those roadblocks. Therefore, they change things and give some students the chance to forego adjudication and "institutional action". Be thankful you go to a school that is looking out for you in that way.

alright thanks for the clarification! but out of curiosity, i read on studentdoctor that a noise violation and illegal downloading warning are IA's. They don't go through the judicial process for either one of those and I doubt they are on the student's record...why are those IAs?

If you are at all concerned, don't believe what you read here; read the AMCAS instructions and follow the recommendations found there.
