Hi,
I was just wondering if you guys could send me your ideas on how to recruit new patients to the college. The students here have seen an overwhelming decrease in patients over the past few years and thus have had a harder time completing requirements even though they were lowered a few years ago.So us as students are trying to problem solve as to what we can do, we have a few obstacles in our way however. The admin seems to want to ignore the facts, we are not allowed to advertise, and even though we are affliated with the university they sent the students to the student health center not to us.So I guess I'm just trying to see if anyone has any ideas on how to help increase our patient population! Thanks!

Who is providing the dental treatment in the student health center? At NYU, some students can rotate through the student health center providing services to faculty and general students. They see 6 students a day as opposed to 2 or 3. The option is somewhat competitive and you typically have to be a 4th year unless you have some nice connections. There is a similar option in an "underserved" area in the bronx. If I was in admin., I'd be interested in looking at off site clinic options like the Arizona dental school has.

As students, have you identified the barriers that are keeping patients out? Location, cost, inconvenience, just don't know about the school?

Do good dental work on your existing patients and they will talk to their family and friends. I have been giving away patients that I cannot handle because I hae too many patients. This all came about because of satisfied customers who decided to pass the word on. I've gotten plenty of OMS and Pros patients this way. I am now waiting for someone to refer some endo to me.

Point is - word of mouth is a great way to get patients in dental school - the same way you will get patients in the real world. Be good to your patients. Do good work. And they will reward you with business!

There is one reason people to the Dental School- low fees. There is no other reason. I have seen some schools with high fees for Dental Services such as 700-800$ for a PFM. The result is fewer people are getting work done, schools are forced to lower requirements and students graduate with fewer experiences and less confidence. I graduated in 05, our crown fees at the school were 170$, partly because we had an inhouse lab. No one dentist could compete with our fees, so he never had a shortage of patients.
