i have about $1000 of cme money to use by the middle of august, with the following stipulations:

1) will not have time to go on any trips over next month, and can not buy conference fees in advance

2) can not use for electronics

so pretty much just leaves it to textbooks, journals, etc..i am a hospitalist, so perhaps a hospital medicine textbook?

thanks for any good ideas!

do what i did as a resident. By 1k in books on B&N.com submit your receipts. Take the books to local B&N store and return them (you have 14 days i believe) Collect your $1000 check. Voila, you just got paid for a shift you didnt have to work.

you managed 1000k in medical books? I barely did that after getting the medstudy series. I suppose if you get Harrisons, the hospitalist medicine book from ACP, some board review books it can happen. but otherwise it's not easy to spend that kind of money on books.

spend some money on board review stuff if you need it, or maintenance of certification through ABIM.

thanks for the ideas. forgot to update my profile - i am a hospitalist now, already took (passed!) boards, so that's not needed. think the hospitalist med text sounds like a good idea.

If you return medical textbooks you ordered online to the store, B&N gives in store credit, not cash.

Incorrect. First hand experience. Bought h online with my credit card. Returned them in store. Money refunded to my credit card.

Really? Whenever I've done this, they always tell me the only way to get your credit card credited is to mail the book back, otherwise they'll only give you store credit

Get caught returning something you purchased with CME funds and you're in for a world of hurt. It's tax fraud -- for your employer and you. If one of my residents were to do this and be caught, I'm not sure I could save them from the GME axe headed their way.
