any advice on what to do next year to better application if alternate status does not work out for this year

You'd have to give more info - it varies greatly by person. The best thing to do would be to call each school, though.

As Cyrille104 said the best thing to do is to call the schools you are alternate for and ask them for your strengths and weaknesses in your app. I got some great ideas on what to work on for next year , if things dont work out. Every person's experience and history is so unique that that is the best way to keep it specific. Remember though it is one opinion and subjective at best...so gather as much info as you can, but be yourself.

I agree with cyrille and horybaby. Your first step is to make appointments with each school and review your application packet with them. Take what they say seriously because they will be looking for those improvements the next time you apply.
I know many of the Animal Sciences students at UF go for a masters of ag if they don't get it. It's a one year non-thesis program that you can basically design yourself, with the help of a mentor. It's a great way for bringing up your GPA. Of course, if your grades are solid and you are short on cash this might not be the way to go.
You could also do an internship somewhere. Disney has a few really good vet internships, one in Animal Kingdom and another in the Livingseas. I had applied to both (in case that I didn't get in) for "Fall". That application period is over, but I think there might be a spring round that lasts from Jan to June.

I plan to retake the GRE, take summer classes to improve my GPA, and gain more experience by volunteering at another clinic. I also will be making appointments to review my file with the schools I applied to. Good luck.
