I'm a 4th year @ SLU School of Medicine....
and i'm giving anyone considering/applying here a harsh yet true warning:
SLU is changing, very actively, for the worst.
Seriously.
Beginning of this year our beloved Registrar lady of 22 yrs service was "let go", i.e. FIRED b/c of $ problems.....and mind you, this is the lady that totally makes your 3rd/4th year clinical schedule, knows everything about residency and applications , and is a magic 8ball when it comes to answering questions about just about anything related to your ever-important academic record.
NOW, our DEAN of Financial Affairs was let go, AND, add to this, the entire department of Financial Affairs is leaving the medical school, and relocating all the freaking way to main campus -- sure it's just 1-2 miles away, but I can't tell you how important, helpful, and frankly NECESSARY it is to have the office right near where you're gonna be in medschool...whose gonna answer all your questions, help w/fill out crap for loans, etc??
(and of course, most of you will need loans if you come to SLU...w/our tuition unbelievably and ridicilously high as it is -- can you believe this: our tuition is high than our smarter, more prestigious neighbor WASH Univ medschool!).
the point of this email is to warn you....
ask about these issues during interview (as i'm sure they'll keep this new info away from you), or call the Deansif you've already interviewed.
I CANNOT REITERATE JUST how big a deal this is for SLUmed...
sure i went to SLU, and sure I'm gonna get a decent residency, and should i'm content w/my education.... --- but the point is: IT SURE AS HELL WAS NOT WORTH THE $$$$$$$$$.
Simple message: If you value your $, go somewhere else. If you appreciate being treated 2nd to the President of SLU's cheapening budget at the cost of the medical campus and students, then by all means, come to SLUmed.
these changes are being made simply for cutting costs, and who is that suffers?? STUDENTS, medical students. <imp. to note that these $-cutting measures are being done throughout the SLU family of schools...so i'd avoid anything do so w/SLU if i were you>. The undergrad campus simply dominates over everyone else...i wish that SLUmed would break away and get some autonomy of its own. Then perhaps medstudents would come 1st.
You simply cannot go to a medschool that treats their students like this. I'd have transferred honestly if this were my 3rd year...luckily i'll be leaving in MAY.
here's a copy of the MASS email i was recently given regarding the recent changes to prove my above concerns:
Fellow Classmates,
As you may or may not be aware, I have been serving as a
student representative to the Office of Student Financial
Planning. The recent news of Dean Fenton's "esignation"and
the transfer of medical student's financial aid to Frost
Campus [main campus] comes as quite a surprise to me and I am sure many ofyou are wondering what is going on. I just got out of a
meeting with Dean Fenton and she wanted me to let you know
that she will be sending out an e-mail towards the end of
this week or early next week giving everyone more
information about what is happening with the financial aid
department. If you have any questions and you can not wait
for that e-mail, you can e-mail your questions to Dean
Fenton at [email protected] and she will be more than happy
to answer them to the best of her ability. As students with
tremendous debt it is very important that we keep abreast of
changes in our financial aid and that we keep fighting for
more scholarships and better loans.
