if fafsa not available yet?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Its working for me now, though it wasn't working before now.

for 2010-2011?? damn, guess i'll keep trying

i was just playing around and accessed the 2009-2010 but could not access 2010-2011

The fafsa opens up every year on January 1. I filled mine out that day. Just keep checking back if it's not working for you.

ehh this is annoying. those of you that have a mac, has it worked for you?

2010-2011 app not working for me as well. I'm using Firefox on a Mac.

huh good to know i am not alone...guess i'll try again tomorrow.

Just tried Internet Explorer on a PC - also does not work for me.

It's January 3. You guys are making me feel like a slacker already at the start of the new year.

my parents want it filled out as soon as i can but i'm getting a lot of errors despite using so-called certified web browsers. I can't get past the first page...

none of my browsers are compatible. they are all "too up to date".....so i am frequently having to load pages or submit things multiple times to get the page to correctly load and continue

How are you guys working on your fafsas already? Did your parents already get their W2 forms? My parents said that they won't get theirs until end of January. Am I suppose to wait this long?

doesn't work for me with either safari or firefox (mac). the fact that the fafsa site doesn't consider these "certified" browsers is ridic - they need to get with the 21st century. these forms are enough of a headache without the technical difficulties on top...

so what version of what browser do we need to view this thang

Ask your parents to use their final paycheck stubs of 2009. This will have their Income and Tax numbers required to fill out the fafsa information

I used the newest Internet Explorer on a Windows 7 machine. Although I did get a notice at the begining of the app that I was incompatible at the beginning, I simply hit continue and had no further problems

Holy crap, so many errors.

Finally fafsa realizes I'm independent even though I have been through all of college!!!
About time.

I just powered through the application by restarting every time it quit out on me and trying to chug forward. I think some of the schools I listed didn't make it on my final submitted app, I guess I can make those up with a correction...?

everytime i try to do anything on there i get this message...

An error occurred while processing your request.
Reference #102.39faead1.1262623870.0

Anyone else getting this too? Is this the errors that you all are getting? It was working fine until i saved and quit...now it wont work at all i just keep getting that message.

I'm a bit new to FAFSA. I am a graduating senior, and will be doing an SMP next year. I guess I have to wait until I am technically accepted to the masters program before filling out FAFSA, since it is for Fall 2010-Spring 2011 school year, and I am not yet accepted into a program for that year?

You do not have to be accepted to fill it out, simply put in the school you are intending to attend, however, it will only process once the school lets fafsa know you've been accepted.

Now that we will be medical students, are we no longer considered dependents? I feel like at interviews I have heard mixed things, with some places saying we are no longer considered dependents of our parents??

All MD students are considered independent, regardless of living situation or tax claims.

I couldn't get it to work on Firefox yesterday but did using Internet Explorer 7... but I did had a lot of errors whenever I clicked 'Next' so I did a lot of refreshing and re-typing.

Save frequently!

in order to obtain grant aid directly from your med school, FAFSA must be completed with all of the parents' financial information
So, we should complete the FAFSA listing ourselves as independent. However we still include all our parents' financial information on the FAFSA, even though we are independent, to be considered for institutional need-based aid by med schools? Based on the above posts, is this correct?

Also when should FAFSA be completed (approx date range) to get financial aid statements ASAP/by March?

I just asked this question (your first one) of a FAFSA help center employee. she told me it depends on the school(s) and that you need to call them and ask. my concern re: this is that my parents are dead, and even though I'd like to be considered for school-aid, there's no option on the form for this. the employee insisted, though, that there was an option for deceased parents and that it is under question #53. I didn't see it, nor were the questions on my form numbered. did anyone else see this option (though I hope you didn't have to look for it!)?

Our school's financial aid office says we must list our parents financials on fafsa and that it will not hurt to list it either. I can't imagine it is any different for other schools unless there's a strange loan situation going on.

Fafsa is first-come first serve to the available money. The sooner you complete it, the sooner you hear back.

^Thanks for the answers!

So do you think it will make a difference to complete it now (early Jan) vs end of Jan into early Feb when W2s will be sent?

I know you can estimate using last year's figures (now), but I figured it'd be easier to wait and just do FAFSA at the end of Jan with the actual numbers. Will this wait actually make a difference as far as getting aid/amount of aid?

Does anyone know where to find the school codes for FAFSA? The colleges seem to be listed, but not the med schools..Thanks!

Thanks, Elijah! Hope you're doing well:xf:
also if you wanted to just double check (god knows how paranoid we are when it comes to med school apps myself included lol) you can go to each schools fin aid website. They always list their school code. And if you look at your schools interview day packet, it should be in there. At least it was for all of mine.

a lot of people are having trouble filling out the fafsa. weird. I did mine in like ten minutes on Jan 1.

I used google Chrome as my browser. worked just fine. maybe there are a lot of people trying to fill it out and it's crashing. I have no idea...but I had absolutely no trouble filling out mine.

They are the same.

Actually, for some schools the med school FAFSA code is the same as the undergrad, but for others (like UCLA) the undergrad and med school have different codes. I found most of mine just by googling.

just use the search function (at the page where it asks for the school code(s)). just put in the school name *without* anything else like "University" or "School of Medicine" (eg, just put in "Stanford" or "Wayne State"). if the school has separate codes for undergraduate and graduate programs, they'll all come up in the search; if there's only one code, that's all that will come up in the search

it is possible that some codes are not on fafsa, so i would be sure to check the college of medicine's site.

example: UK's CoM code is diff and not on the fafsa search options

No difference. Each school has a deadline. Unless you're expecting a rather substantial amount of money that others might get before you, no rush. A lot of schools don't process financial aid applications until later in the season.
Awesome thanks!!!
