after dental school with moderate stats and complete it... will it make me a better candidate for one of those 6 yr OMFS programs because I will already have my degree in both medicine and dentistry?

There are only 2-3 programs I can apply to because of my family and my stats are far from wonderful (low class rank), good board scores.

Why would you want a 6 year combined program that awards an MD if you had just received one? Am I missing something?

I was hoping that would improve my chances because I would already have an MD. That in theory should knock it down to 4 years and then they could accept a new resident sooner. The schools near where I want to settle all are 6 yr programs.

It's not quite that simple because they only have so much room for omfs residents at the program. In order to accommodate you, they would somehow need to make extra room in the hospital for you during those 2 years the rest of your cohort is in med school. It might be difficult to do that because there's only so much work and an extra person would take away from the other residents' learning experience. There are a few programs out there with pathways for non-DDS/DMD degree holding MDs to go into OMFS, but they are quite rare. And although I'm sure you have legitimate reasons for wanting to stay in your area, it's not a high selling point for programs where the majority of highly qualified candidates would move halfway across the globe to be at their program on a drop of a dime. You'd probably get the best answer from the programs you're interested in to see if they would entertain some sort of arrangement with you.

Are you in med school now? Getting into the place you want might be a big enough task in itself.

Elaborate on the reason you can only apply to 2-3 programs. If true, you probably can't become an OMFS. 6 year programs don't want you to come unless you are in it for 6 years or they have someone quit which opens up a spot. This happens rarely and unpredictably.

Are you foreign trained (MBBS / BDS / equivalence) ?

I somewhat understand your reasoning, but as others have pointed out, I think the logic is flawed.

You want to do a 4 year MD program after dental school, so you can get into a 6 year OMFS program and only do 4 years in that program because you'll already have the MD. It simply doesn't work like that.

And, who is to say you'll get into an MD program at all (MD schools aren't going to like the fact that you're a dentist and want to be a dentist yet get an MD)? Would you only apply to a couple of schools for the same reasons that you would only apply to a couple of OMFS programs?

Yeah, for family reasons. There are 3 medical schools and 3 OMFS programs near enough that I wouldn't disrupt too much of the lives of my family. One program however is a DO program (LECOM) and given their reputation, I'm not sure that would be a satisfactory move. I just want to get into an OMFS program. One is 4 years here. Would a medical degree help me get into that OMFS program?

SO, you are going to have a dds/dmd degree, and are willing to on a gamble go through 4 years of med school, and then, on a gamble, get accepted to an omfs program for another 4 years. As a dmd/dds you could enter the work field, and likely earn over those 8 years 1 million+ dollars of income. But, you are worried about where you go to school to not upset something with your family. We are talking about 500k - 1000k of income because you dont want to move. Is your wife an attorney or plastic surgeon? As someone said before, LOGIC FLAWED.

Without more information on your family, I cannot understand how going through medical school after dental school avoids disrupting them while just applying to programs around the country and being done sooner does not. With this idea you have, you end up taking longer and spending more money. Doesn't your family need you to provide $$ at some point?

I am going to have to agree with everyone on here, I read the OP three times and am still confused to the back door logic it does not make any sense to me.

Alternatively, you could work at a dental school or at a clinic to gain experience and then apply for OMFS. The separate MD seems useless for this.

I would forget the OMFS, if you believe you cannot match into it straight out of dental school. You will have a great job when you complete dental school. If you still want to apply to med school, the first question is what is your undergrad GPA? I know that some of the medical schools' average undergrad GPA are going up (not really for sure why)--University of Cincinnati average was around 3.75 and University of KY was similar. You stated your class rank is low, which may not count against you but I am sure the med school admissions people will probably want to know it. Anyways, I would think hard about pursuing another 4 years to obtain a degree you may not use in the long run. Don't forget the cost (unless you're already rich)!!

You really want to do OMFS... do an OMFS internship and reapply. That is probably a better bet. 👍

You continue to be very encouraging. I like hope! How much do you think an internship would help?

moderately, depending on where you do it. i know several people who did them and still didn't match.

Well.. I think it would increase your chances of getting into OMFS residency more so than doing 4 years of med school alone.
