What have you folks (if any) done if you've taken a year off? Since you would be applying at the end of your senior year, you can't really put it on your app?

Also, what kind of job/position would let you take 15-20 days off in the fall for interviews?

Hi. I am new to the board and this is my first post. I just graduated from college and am also taking the year off while applying. I was lucky enough to find a job at my local hospital as a Lab Assistant. The job is casual pool, meaning I just work when they need me. So I am not necessarily committed to five days a week. That's one of the good things about hospital work, I think, because there's all sorts of flexible shifts they need covered.

If you explain your situation to your potential employers, you'll quickly find out if you'll be able to take days off for interviewing.

I work as a lab tech, for a public university. I am given every year 22 days off, 9 holidays, 4.5 personal leave and 22 sick days. Apply to University of WI madison, the benefits are awesome! Or check out your local public U. On the downside, i make no money 🙁 30,000/year. I am staying for the vaca days.

I taught undergrad math as an associate lecturer. It's nice being 'full time' without actually having to be somewhere every day (or all day).

Seems to be that sticking to academia, as the others also have, gives you more options.

I know several people who are working as medical assistants. If you have a certain specialty in mind (say cardiology) and you're able to work as a medical assistant in a cardiology practice, then you'll gain so much experience and it could really be beneficial.

😱

I thought our place (U of Utah) was pretty good: 12 vacation days, 2 personal days, 11 holidays, and 12 sick days. Do the vacation days carry-over?

I applied during my senior year, got rejected, and took a full year off before applying again. Thus, I'll be out of school for two years when I start.

I work as a phlebotomist at the local hospital. There is a fair amount of room for flexibility in the schedule if I just want to switch shifts with someone after the schedule comes out, and I get 4 weeks of paid vacation every year, so interviews shouldn't be much of a problem.

Yes they do. But only for a year, so the most you can have at one time is 44 days. The personal time doesn't carry over, the sick time does. It is a pretty sweet deal.
