If you take a pass/fail class, how does that change gpa?

how does it affect gpa while applying to med school if I go pass/fail?

If i pass, how would that affect my gpa?

What if I fail and my transcript says unsatisfactory? how would that affect it?

Thanks.

I don't think it affects it either way. If you pass it you get credit for it and if you don't, you don't get credit for it. Of course it also shows up on your transcript.

At least this is how it works at my school. Can't imagine it's too different anywhere else.

It doesn't. Hence pass/fail.

At my undergrad if you passed the class it was not calculated into your gpa. If you failed however it was as if you earned an "F" in an A-F course.

That doesn't make any sense.

I'm not hear to defend it (although I think it makes perfect sense) just stating the policy at my undergrad.

Straight from the Student Handbook
The "P" or "F" is recorded on the student's transcript and credit is given if the course is passed. If the course is failed, the "F" is considered equivalent to an "F" received under the "A-F" grading system and is included in calculation of the GPA. Once credit is received for a course taken under the P/F system, the course cannot be repeated under the "A-F" grading system.

Depends on your school. I didn't think it counted in your gpa at my school but I took snowboarding as a PE last spring and it ended up counting as an A for 1 credit hour in my gpa. Actually gave me the extra .0x that I needed to get on deans list 😀

i believe at my undergrad, it doesn't affect gpa, but i'm trying to figure out if it affects the gpa for med school application. i heard med school first gets like a gpa/mcat/undergrad/program of study and that's how they kinda screen applicants for secondary. Would the U lower that initial gpa that med schools would see?

It's really dependent on your school policies but most of the time it doesn't affect your gpa at all

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong....but AMCAS is going to recalculate your GPA according to their rules anyway depending on the courses you enter. In AMCAS, P/F doesn't do anything to your GPA.

Correct.

Im also pretty sure that is correct.

My adviser told me pass/fail classes are not calculated into the GPA, and the AMCAS doesn't count them as part of the GPA either.
