What would be you "key" point to include, or exclude a school? I't attempting to make a check list and I'd love additional input from my SDN brethern since I'm fairly new to all this.

location (there are four in state MD and 1 in state DO, with two more MD opening soon)
cost (prefer in state obviously, but heck! just to gain acceptance is an honor)
accepting of non-trads.

I tried searching, but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for, but if there are previous threads started, feel free to link 🙂

wait a minute.... for application right? You're title and description don't seem to match...

if you mean for making a school list:

I think it depends on your stats and how much you are willing the spend. I'm guessing you live in michigan.. which is pretty friendly for pre-meds. If I am correct, be sure to apply to the ohio schools (toledo, wright, cinci, osu etc), we don't hate on michigan too much (plus you get converted in instate after 1 year).

I only applied to 9 school this past cycle and managed to interview at 4, and I felt school selection was key. I bit the bullet and accepted I wasn't going to get in at OSU no matter what, so instead of applying there I applied to a school I felt like I had a greater chance of at least receiving an interview. There is a lot of touch in school selecting. The application cycle is crazy, and you'll often receive interviews from school you didn't think you would and none from schools you were sure you would (in my case cinci... f you cinci!!111!!eleven)

for acceptance:

Go where you like the most and feel will provide you the best opportunity for the $$

I apologize!! I wasnt really sure how to word it, and I've also very much considered the Ohio and Indiana schools. I suppose, yes, how did you decide where to apply and/or accept. The info you provided is EXACTLY what I mean, I didnt know that you got residency after a yead 😳

Im LMFAO at your cinci statement! But seriously, I'm sure I'll be able to qualify for some application assistance (I'll be divorced this year, single mama... damn this will financially hurt, but we are still good friends).

Im looking at Northern-ish Ohio schools, so I am assuming i've got the soon to be 7 schools in Michigan (probably 6, I'm not going to apply to UofM, my stats are strong enough).

just be realistic with a majority of school. For instance, OSU has an average mcat of like 35 or something, I had a 29.... So i didn't waste my money. I went to the library, brought in a printed out list of schools and went through it and looked at where my stats placed in their previous matriculation data. If I was in the bottom 10%, I didn't apply. If a school had an estimated cost of 90k - I didn't apply. If its incoming class was less than 20% OOS, I didn't apply.

I sent applications to schools in ohio, mich, illinois, penn, and newyork. I didn't want to waste money driving/flying across the country... So i applied where I was willing to travel.

We're from great pre-med states, so apply broadly in the area and you shouldn't have a problem as long as you don't have any red flags.

If you get FAP, send applications out like wild.

I have totally realized this, and states that enjoy non trads. Which book did you look through? I'm wondering if I could borrow it from some premed advisor. yeah, I'm looking mid west with the exception of NY and AZ (Touro), so it seems like you are now officially my pre-med big 🙂

Its called MSAR (Medical School Admissions Requirements), she probably has it.

Yup. It's sitting in the waiting area! I thought maybe a magic book with a genie to get me in then pay for school...

Applying smartly is a great deal about being reasonable and humble as well in reference to your scores (GPA/MCAT and EC's). School averages for these things are readily available from a number of sources (MSAR from AMCAS is a great comprehensive one). No matter how high your scores are, don't ever think you're an "automatic" at any American MD school..

As far as choosing between schools once accepted, factors differ from person-to-person but typically include:
- cost
- focus (research vs primary care)
- location
- the feeling that you "fit" on interview day
- matching

Thanks MB,
Yeah if anything I'll bee TOO humble, my previous UG grades are mediocre, but my UG ec and involvement at the time was crazy( looking back). Currently I am working full time and shoving classes/shadowing in when I can. I'm not worried about pt contact or ec because they are sorta build in with my job.

Deciding which schools you are going to accept before you've even applied is getting a little ahead of yourself.

As far as where to apply, in addition to the things medbound mentioned, you just need to apply broadly. With that being said, ask yourself if you would legitimately go to every school on your list if it was the only place you are accepted. For example, I didn't apply to any DO schools this past year, because if I hadn't gotten accepted this year I would've given MD schools one more shot before deciding to go the DO route (no offense osteopathic doctors). I've seen some people on here before questioning taking an acceptance to a particular school because they really don't want to go there, and it might be their only acceptance.

I'm sorry if i miswrote, or if you misread, but I apologize if I gave you the impression that I feel that I am going to be accepted before application. I'm actually quit the opposite

My questions are more what criteria did you use for applying and accepting. I have no issue going DO or MD, a physician is a physician although I know the potential difficulty in matching in some areas. I'm not really big into names, etc, because I see the big picture of just wanting to practice medicine, not what school I went to (unless it matters for matching, scores, etc). I also have the additional concerns of family to think of.
