If you were given the chance to go abroad after you first year as a premed and were on the advanced standing track and had an EMT certification, you go abroad and “shadow” a doctor ( in a developing country)…even if you do not have much experience? What type of volunteering program would you set up for yourself in regards to after completing your first year, would you take organizational programs if you could and that allowed you to do so? What if there was a country you wanted to go to but no volunteer programs were offered…would you take it in your own hands, or would you wait until later? I am curious to know whether others would accept this idea.

I don't know what country has no chances to volunteer (I even went to Kiribati). But it is not necessary to leave the country to pursue volunteering as many think. It is more about showing dedication and motivation to really want to help others. If your searching for something the Medical schools will like to see you should seek out things that put you in direct contact with the people you are working with. Shadowing a Doctor won't serve much as a pre-med and will probably annoy the Doc in the process. Search for front-desk ER, Homeless shelters, ect. If you didn't volunteer your first year at all you should get started soon.
