If you just won a $5,000,000 lottery jackpot, would you give it up-to live it up?

This poll is annonymous, so please be honest.

Please vote ONLY if you are currently 28 years old or older. You know why, the younger folks think that they will live forever, and the older we get the wiser we get.

Just curious...

Thank You.🙂

I'd still pursue EM and simply keep my lottery winnings as "f--k you money" in case I ever got fed up and wanted to just quit.

Damn...I forgot to put a "No, I will never ever leave my medical job"...option.

I wish we can edit polls too!😡

I'm only a year and a half from BE status so I would finish. Even the rest of residency would be less stressful when I'm driving to work in my M3 and going out to dinner any time I want. Then I'd work 5-8 daytime hospitalist shifts per month (less and I think I'd just get stupid) start an indigent clinic where I would personally staff 1 day per month MAX, and spend the rest of my time making frequent trips to New York, Costa Rica, and anywhere else i please. And at least two days a month watching movies and playing xbox with my kids and shrieking at anyone who dared interrupt. Medicine is fun in small to medium doses.

I'd make smart investments and plan to work relatively short hours with grand vacations...

But I just started residency (transitional) and I actually enjoy it for the most part. However it's been a while since I've had a rough rotation so I may feel different next week when I return to the floors.

I'll be starting PM&R training in June and I'll be 28 in July and I know I won't live forever (actually survived near death experiences including gymnastics in my car).

NO I'm 32 and an ortho graduate

No, but I would reduce my work schedule when out of residency.

BTW over 28 and FP

Hmmmm. Why are there only "Yes" options???

NO- Although 5 million bucks equals 125k x 40 y if you do not invest, I would finish residency and work on a lighter schedule as an attending, use the 5 mil as a cushion to pay for vacations and splurges- and my work car (mercedes slk 350) and touring car (undecided). I love what I do, just not at 80 hours a week.

PS: Im 28+ and in obgyn residency. I do like the 'f*** you money' idea. I think about it at least once a week.😉

I would walk away as PGY3 (of 5) in general surgery. I'd invest that money and be financially free for the rest of my life. I would not go buy an expensive car or big house or anything...I would pay off my student loans, invest some for income and some for growth. I would do that even if the $5 mil was BEFORE taxes and uncle sam took half.

That way I could have my life back. Time is a more valuable comodity than money, but you need some money before you can be truly free.

I can't agree more. I like medicine, I would still practice some. But I would take my time and enjoy life.

no, not enough money to pull me away from medicine.

No. I'd spend that money so fast it would be sick. Including taking care of parents, family, etc. I'd just live nice and comfortable, finish residency and have some dough to open a nice practice.

Why practice just a little and take the risk?

If you're going to make a poll, you should at least include the "I'm still in college/med school"

I'd invest some, buy a nice house, splurge on a car, take some phat vacations, but I'd definitely keep working. I love my job!

If you're going to make a poll, you should at least include the "I'm still in college/med school"

But then this will defeat the purpose of this poll.😉 😉 This poll is for us, the med. students, to view.

Besides we med. students (in general) do not have enough experience in any speciality to qualify us to vote fairly and without bias (if a specialty deserves to be "divorced" for just, yes just, 5 Million dollars).

5 million, if invested correctly is lots of money.

Besides, lets say you made 1/2 million a year. You most likely would have to work about 6o hours per weeks to do it.

But if you had the chance to make less but have your freedom, That may be worth it. Think about it, when you wake up in the morning, you don't have to go anywhere if you don't want or you can jump on a plane to anywhere.

hmm... 5 million.

I'd start by moving my mother in law to Alaska.

What is 5 million in lottery winnings taxed at? 50% 2.5 million dollars spent nicely gets you out of debt, into a great house, and a fantastic start on retirement savings. 5 million isn't quit your job today money. 50 million is. 500 million might as well be infinity when it comes to money.

Just to clarify,....the 5 Million dollars are all yours. They are AFTER taxes/expences.🙂

I'm totally with you on this one. The money buys freedom, and this is what is priceless. I would do what I love, and not worry about the reprecussions. If that means practicing medicine, philanthropy or traveling then so be it.

Why isn't a "no" category included?

Why isn't a "no" category included?

As I mentioned in the 3rd post on this thread,....I forgot. We cannot go back and edit polls.

Besides, if you are a "NO" voter, you do not NEED to be annoymous. You can just post and say "I vote NO because........." The "YES" voters, on the other hand have to be annonymous to increase the validity of this poll.🙂

As expected, IM and FM take the lead ("pure" medicine). Although personally, I thought General Surgery would top them all.

Now I was surprised by the number of Anesthesiologists and Radiologists who would quit, to start a new career, for just 5 Million dollars!!!😱
Those fields offer the "best" lifestyle in medicine, relativly!!!! What gives?
