So do you have to get board certified in each state you want to work in? For example if you finished residency in a state, and wanted to work in a different state, you'd have to take board exams for that specific state and pass?

And then if you wanted to leave said state to work in yet another location, you'd have to do this all over(board certification)?

You have to resit the boards every 7-10 years.

I believe the timeline on the license is similar.

Medical licenses are usually on a 2 year renewal cycle.

Board Certification is done by a professional medical specialty society such as American Academy of Pediatrics. It is earned after doing a residency in the medical specialty (when you are known as board eligible) and then passing an exam (when you are board certified in the specialty)

Actually certification is a function of the board, not the professional societies, ie, American Board of Pediatrics, American Board of Surgery etc.
