Anyone have recent data on IHS (AZ,MT,Dakotas) wages,OT, retirement, housing etc?

Been thinking about this again after my current contract...My main question is how much wage will I come in with 9 years rph, several manager? How does pension/healthcare work currently, how much OT is available at 1.5 rate, and lastly how much is rent for 2 or 3 bed house/apartment on the Rez? I would think rent would be very low due to government subsidy?...

WM is going great at this store but just daydreaming again.

Thanks

I lived in Montana/North Dakota for several years. I did not work at an IHS facility, but looked into jobs there. However, except for Alaska, I would doubt housing is provided (there may be a few very remote places outside of Alaska). Normally, you would not live on the reservation. You would buy/rent your own home in one of the towns close by. There is no government subsidy for non-Native employees (that I have seen anyway).

I have seen one place in New Mexico (extremely remote) that provided housing, and a few (but not all) places in Alaska. I've not seen any other IHS jobs outside of that provide housing. When I looked into several IHS facilities in Montana and North Dakota, you would rent your own house in a regular town (not on the reservation) just like at any other job. Unless you are PRN or TDY, you are typically salary and exempt. So you are never paid overtime.

I work directly for a Tribal-run IHS facility, so pay scale does not have to match government. You can look up the government pay scale (GS12-15) to see the pay scale for the area you are looking at. However, working for a Tribe directly, your pay is what you can convince them (or prove to them) you are worth. When I went for my interview, they told me their pay scale and it was $30,000/year less than I would have been willing to take. At the end of the interview they offered me the job at exactly what I stated I would work for, which was $30,000 more than they were originally offering. So ask for what you are worth (at any job). They can say no, and you move on. Or they will pay you what you know you are worth.

As a side note, if housing isn't provided as part of the job (which most do not offer that), you will typically NOT be living on the reservation (this may be different in remote parts of Alaska where the only town for many miles IS the reservation). However, housing on the reservation is typically a scarce resource and is utilized by and for the Native Americans only. I guess someone else can chime in if they have had other experiences. But for instance, on the reservation where I work, they are not allowed to rent to a non-native (actually not just any Native American, it must be a Tribal member of their own tribe), and they don't provide housing for employees. On the reservation where I work, a non-native can never own a home on the reservation, and can ONLY live on a home or in an apartment on the reservation if they are married to a Tribal member.
