I was listening to some people talk today and apparently one of the anesthesiologists according to them did anesthesiology, then CC fellowship, and sometime afterwards was allowed to sit in for the IM board, w/o doing an IM residency.. so he is now 3 boarded

Has anyone heard of this before?

Never.

Why would anyone want 3 headaches?

They are good anesthesiologists but their IM skills don't translate into more revenue.

I would think IM boarding would make a candidate more competitive at the very least. I'm thinking with regards to the new 5 year IM/Anesthesiology programs.

More competitive at what? IM/Anesthesia is kind of like a singer-dancer: for a singer, she's a good dancer, and for a dancer, she's a good singer, but she's neither a great singer nor a great dancer. 😉

Those 6 months by which the training is cut short, in each specialty, do matter.

Now if somebody does Anesthesia after an IM residency, it's usually a different story. They can be really good at both, but nobody really cares about their IM training, except for pre-anesthesia clinic purposes.

Lol this somehow turned into IM/ANesthesia combined programs or something. I was wondering is there anyway you can take iM board without doing the 3 year IM residency. [I have heard of taking people fellowship boards exams w/o doing the actual fellowship.. like for peds anesthesia but i never heard of taking IM board w/o IM)
