So I decided to take the calc based physics with all of the engineers, instead of the algebra based with the other premeds. I messed up pretty bad and won't get better than a 3.1

I just need someone to tell me it's going to be ok. What did you guys get in first quarter physics? Would it look bad if I switch down into the algebra based class for the next two quarters?? I'm freaking out...

It's OK.

Switch into the algebra-based track if you want, but don't panic over a single 3.1. Or even several 3.1s. If you've got other science/math grades that are better than that, you're probably doing fine. There are plenty of stories (you can even find them on these very forums) of successful medical school applicants who have recorded B's - or, even, C's - on various classes.

That said, higher grades are better. But not worth panicking over.

It's okay. Just do well in all your other science classes and you'll be fine.

this isn't groznyj grad where if major raikov discovers that you are solid snake you will fail the mission. take it easy; no one's perfect. SNAAAKE SNAAAAKE

Dumb move.. why would you take calc-based physics. For fun? You deserve a 3.1 ...however it is you can get that from a single class 🙄

I find calc-based physics way easier. You don't have to deal with tons of formulas. It's so much more logical and it helps you understand the concepts better.

3.1% Damn...

But Calc-based physics IS fun. 😀

I just felt that physics at any reasonable level does need calculus to make sense. I don't know how one can handle all but the simplest cases of kinematics without understanding instantaneous velocity as the derivative of displacement with respect to time, for example. There are all these ways to skirt around using calculus - "it's how fast the speed is changing" as a way to rephrase a = dv/dt, but for me at least I enjoyed learning it the proper way.

I like calc-based but you'll be ok. It's very rare that any one thing in your application will sink your med school application. It's always a combination. Just do better in the rest. And go down to algebra.

It will be ok. If I were you I would switch to algebra based next time.

The notion that a B or two is the end of the med school dream is wrong. I know someone in med-school right now who I know for a fact had multiple C's and a couple W's on her transcript. Not to say that is the norm, but it happens. Anyways, you will be fine. Don't be too hard on yourself.

agreed.

why all the flaming for wanting to take a more advanced (and better) course

physics minus calculus isn't much of anything after all. There's a reason why we go to college besides finishing pre-med requirements. Way to take a more challenging course, and no, one bad grade is not going to kill you.

in the end, you will actually have LEARNED something.

It will be ok.

I got a B in physics and it all worked out. You'll be happy to know that physics is probably the least applicable to clinical medicine of all the pre-reqs (in my opinion)

Got a B the 1st semester, on the way to an A for second semester. Don't fret! Not a big deal.

Haha thanks guys. I feel like I was being overly dramatic, but you guys helped me out nonetheless 😳

I personally think it will be fine, I can tell you that as of right now I do not have a 4.0 in my calc based physics, and one of my general ed profs is out to get me. He seriously has an agenda, he's given me 1.0's on all of my last papers and when I ask him what the problem is he says there is no problem and that I'm a great student and he wants to write letters of recommendation for my med-school apps (as if I would let him anywhere near my apps if he's giving me a 1.0). That being said, I went up to his desk today and he had his to-do list out on his desk and one of the bullet points had my name with my overall gpa next to it, I was too afraid to ask what it was about. So if you're worried about a 3.1 you can only imagine the stress I am under currently.

This whole thing sounds...odd. Why would a professor care about your overall GPA and how would he/she even check? Although I am sure there are ways. Anyways, it just seems odd that he/she would have your name on a paper with your overall GPA circled.

this contributes nothing.

Just don't let colonel Campbell find out.

Freshman year I had C's in Physics 1 and 2 (calc based because of Eng major). I worked hard and did better after that. I ended up getting a 13 on the physics section of the mcat and getting into multiple medical schools this past cycle. You really shouldn't sweat getting a 3.1 which I assume is a B.
