I also like the DO philosophy more, treating the patient, rather than the disease. My dad is also a DO from back in the old days and is impressed with how far they've come.

As for the more competitive specialties, i have no manual dexterity, so surgery is out. I hate physics, so rads is out. The skin sounds terribly boring, so derm is out. I don't want to add silicon to hollywood moms, so plastics is out. The eye freaks me out, so optho is out. ENT?, yuck.

I'd suggest looking at each schools match list. From what I have read Osteopathic student place into extremely competitive residencies, so If you change your mind about what you want to specialize in later on, there won't be a problem as long as you have the numbers, LORs, etc to back you up. Good luck :luck:

If you work and study hard, you should be fine. Just like the above poster mentioned, check out schools' match lists. I know/have heard of DOs placing into Pathology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry. You may want to talk to DOs in these specialties to get real feedback from them.

All of those generally don't have a problem...and although radiology has a physics test or something now....I heard it is nothing big. My dad is horrible at math/physics and he is a radiologist. On a side note...nice log-in name. Go PSU baby! * as a side note...all of the things you hate are the most competitive so that helps your cause as well.

The match list may be a little helpful, but it is very unreliable. Each class is diffrerent and many people have different preferences for their choice specialty. In my class there was only one person interested in pathology. In the 3-4 classes before mine, there was zero to one person (per class) interested in pathology which could be misconstrued that students were unable to place into this specialty. As previous posters stated, if your numbers are stong (along with LOR), you'll do fine.

I'm glad you know you want to be a doctor. I'm also glad you have an idea of what you dont want to do - I think that takes a certain amount of maturity. However, I urge you to be cautious about going to DO school because of the "DO philosophy" - question whether or not you believe it's true that "treating the patient" is a "DO philosophy" and if so, how exactly is it achieved by DOs? Remember that it is more difficult to land certain specialties as a DO and you *might* change your mind about what you want to do.
