hello guys, I'm just dreaming about being as "dental" student. Unfortunately, my dream is way too far I believe. Allow me introduce myself, I'm an international student, and this is my second year in college. I've completed 33.5 credits now, and currently my gpa is very bad (2.65) 👎 and I'm taking 20 credits in this spring. For me, it's really hard job to take 20 cr, but I've been studyin pretty hard in this semester and hopefully I can increase my gpa!
I know I hav to complete least 90 cr to go to dental school. Thus, I'm thinking to take 20 cr on summer, and 20 cr on fall so after fall, I will gain
total 93.5 cr. I've just completed 2 General chem, 2 math, and 1 micro for preparing dental school. I'm gonna finish up rest of pre-reqs (physics, Ochem, eng, bio) til this year. It sounds crazy, but I have no other choices and I really want to try!!
so here comes my question,
assume my gpa gets higher enough,
IS THERE ANY WAY TO APPLY AND GET ACCEPTED IN THIS YEAR?????
basically, I havent prepared anything, but LORs and other helping stuffs, I think no problem. Critical thing is that I havent taken the DAT yet, and I heard in order to take it, I need one yr biology and chem so my second question is,
MICROBIOLOGY DOESNT COUNT AS HALF-YEAR BIOLOGY, DOES IT?????
hopefully, it does...so I can take DAT after summer..after take one more MICRO or GENERAL BIO...
That's all for now...I can't stop for worring about my future..thx for reading my thread and CONGRAT to EVERYONE!! 👍

I assume you mean the 2007 cycle. You have a huge mountain to climb my friend! (that's my nice way of saying....no)

Horrible GPA, international student, no DAT, no Ochem or Bio (meaning the DAT is far, far away. Taking the DAT before those classes is impossible). Plus, getting in without a degree is very hard. You need to be a total stud to do that at some most schools. Some schools straight up won't take you w/out one.

Forget 2007, save your $.

My advice?? Get your GPA UP!! and keep it up. You have to ACE the rest of your school, especially pre-reqs. Then destroy the DAT! Forget SDN for now, it's a waste of time. Concentrate on your grades. Make every class seem like if you don't get an 'A' you will never be a dentist.

PDizzle has spoken!

Why not relax a little? Just calm down and breathe. Applying for this cycle is out of the questions with very little prereq work done and a low GPA.

You need to concentrate on taking less class and getting high grades. It's not going to help you if you have 95 credits, but you need to retake 45 because your grade wasn't high enough.

So for now, finish the semester the best you can. Take like 10 credits over the summer and 12-15 next semester and so on until you can pull that GPA up.

You need to chill out and do better. It's really all about numbers. Shoot for a 3.3. :luck:

I agree w/ the previous two posts. You have weakness in all area, but that doesn't mean u will be like that by this time of next year. Focus on your classes and grades, worry about DAT only after you have taken all the pre-reqs. And also in my opnion, most dental school prefers u to have undergraduate degree. I know it is not necessary, but having it will strengthen your application; otherwise, you will need to have an excellent GPA which prove that u could handle the class load (assuming that u prb won't take upper level science classes)

as for the bio question, micro is a bio course and bio courses are required to take the DAT, but micro isnt going to help you on the DAT. if you go to a bookstore and check out a Kaplan DAT prep book, you'll see that the bio section is a WIDE range of biology subjects that you will at least need an intro to bio course to introduce you to.
as for getting in early, taking 20 credits each semester isnt going to help your GPA, especially when you start taking ochem. with 20 credits a semester you wont have any time to study for the DAT or shadow a dentist. dont rush this and mess up your GPA...take it slow and work hard. i graduated in 3 yrs so i applied after my 2nd year, but the most credits i had at one time was 16. good luck.

save your money and time

if you're applying as an international student AND applying a year early (applying as a junior) you need to be another notch higher than the competition. schools do accept ppl who apply early (as juniors) but those kiddos are usually superstars and outshine the average applicant. and to be frank, with the GPA, right now you're below the average competition. work to get that GPA up first, then take the DATs, then start worrying about applying. don't apply the next cycle b/c you'll only be stressing yourself out and wasting a lot of $$--work to get the GPA up first.

thx for replyin guys!!
I appreciate with your "honest" answers!
Yes, I have to upgrade my GPA FIRST!!! good thing that most classes I hav taken are generals~ it's still looooooong way to go~!
I'm gonna relax little bit for now n juss concentrate on my studies~
