Hello, I am a fourth year Italian med student. On our fourth year we start rotations.

The first rotation is in IM.

Yeah, it kinda sucks. Be ready to not know a lot.

What are the most difficult things to handle, from personal experience, on IM rotation?

As opposed to the above poster I loved IM, but then I want to do med/peds. There is alot to know and it can be overwhelming...I'd review some things that are certain to come up - pneumonias and their tx, chest pain differential & work-up, sob diff & w/u, GI bleeding, etc. Antibiotics are high-yield. You might also want to brush on reading chest x-rays & EKGs...these were things I was commonly pimped on.

Otherwise, you'll see much more on IM and try to read some every night about the conditions your pts have. The book I liked the most was Step-Up to Medicine.

tx - treatment
sob - shortness of breath
w/u - work-up

If you're Italian and live and study in Italy...why do you need our help with English medical abbreviations?

Because I lived in the US when little and my second language is English, which I think I speak pretty well. I study on English textbooks, and plan to go to the UK or US to do my specialty training, so it is useful for me to know the meaning of words. Plus, the previous poster used them, and I didn't know what they meant.

And even if I didn't have a reason, you could have answered out of courtesy, and because ignorance doesn't bring people anywhere! 😀
