I'm on my last year of high school and after I finish, I'm planning on going to pharmacy school, right after I finish the pre-pharmacy stuff. But, I don't know whether I should go to a community college then transfer to a university, or if I should just go to the university and then on the pharmacy school. Also, when would be a good time to apply for pharmacy school? And how long does it usually take to complete all the pre-pharmacy courses?

Anyone who has gon through pharmacy school, what did you do to get started and what was it like?

First off, start by looking into 0-6 PharmD programs. To briefly explain, they are programs that you apply to straight out of high school, in which you do two years of pre-reqs and automatically enter your first year of pharmacy school after that. They take 6 years, hence the name 0 to 6. But there is one BIG caveat: don't apply to these unless you are REALLY sure that you want to be a pharmacist. I'd highly suggest shadowing one or becoming a tech first, just to see what it's like.

On SDN, no real concensus has been made regarding classes taken at CC's. Some people say that professional schools look down on this, others say it doesn't really matter. You can search the forums for threads on this; I'm sure there are a million of them. Either way, let me just tell you that it is MUCH MUCH harder to apply and get accepted to a pharmacy school after taking only the pre-reqs. Does it happen? Yes. Is it hard to do? Yes.

Your best bet is to take the traditional 4 years of undergrad + 4 years of pharmacy school, unless you get accepted to one of the 0-6 programs I mentioned earlier. Off the top of my head I can name a few that you might want to look into:

Northeastern
MCPHS Boston
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia
University of Rhode Island
UConn
....
....
....

There are many more, do some browsing on the pre-pharm forums and Google.

What about online classes from community colleges, do they carry the same "stigma" people think regular cc classes have?

I'm actually not quite sure if professional schools accept credit for pre-reqs completed online. Don't quote me on this though, I may be totally wrong.

I was looking at Idaho State because they have a 0-6 program but I was confused on how to start the process.
