Long story short, Im halfway through my 1st year of med school. Im attending a school in Europe that is not eligible to recieve financial aid. So I've been having to pay out of my own pocket... and with the help of my Dad cause I dont have enough money to do it on my own.

Well, my dad has suddenly decided to no longer help me pay for school and I only have enough savings to make it through 1 more year at MOST. I dont know what to do. I cant afford to take 2-3 years off and work to save up the money I need. This couldnt have happened to me at a worse time🙁 I need some advice.

Crap. I'm sorry to hear that. Why the sudden choice to stop supporting you? What happened? If I were you, I'd try reconciling with, or otherwise appealing to, your father. Try to work it out with your father until you can't stand trying any more. Find out where the glitch is, and correct it. Make some compromises, if necessary. Since I don't know the story behind your troubles, I can't diagnose the problem. I do know from experience that money is one of the most argued subjects in any relationship. Most arguments, for what it's worth, begin with, and are sustained by, either/both parties maintaining that they are "right". Let go of being right, listen to what your father's objections are, see if you can address them and reenlist your father's support.

If reconcillation fails, at this stage, you may have to take out some high-interest private loans, in addition to working your ass off overtime at your job. It goes without saying that you should liquidate all unnecessary assets. If your dad isn't willing to actually help pay for your education, perhaps he'd be willing to be your cosigner for a loan. That would be very beneficial, and this alone could ease your way to success in getting the money that you need. I don't know how medical schools work in Europe, but in the US it's usually not a good idea to leave medical school once you've started. Also, in the US, schools don't want you to leave them, either. Perhaps European medical schools are similar? If so, you can appeal to your school for some kind of assistance, even if they can only suggest a direction to go, further resources to explore, or give you some kind of work-study solution. Don't be afraid to ask for help, if you truly need it.

Personally, I'd do whatever it took to stay in and finish school, if it were remotely possible at all. I'm sure this won't be easy, but it's better than quiting school for financial reasons and then having to reapply and pick it up later.

Check with the foreign medical school forum here. They may be more knowledgeable about your specific situation.

Best of luck to you.

The classic situation of Napolean in the Russian winter. Do you have collateral for a large personal loan? Would a Carribean school accept you as a transfer? You clearly are in bad shape. Without funding you're dead in the water. It's time to get back stateside and plan your next move in my opinion.

Trying to get help from your father is your best bet...just say what you have to. If not go for a loan from a U.S. institution (it's better than leaving). Good luck

I came across several people studying medicine in Eastern Europe (Czech, Poland), and one in Russia ... and all of them are able to get Stafford loans, so you might want to check again.

Also, it is not a large amount like here, but like 5k-15k per year, so you could also put them on private loan, credit cards ...

All the best
