Should I wait until I finish my summer session to send in my app? I got a C- in Physics II and so I'm retaking it. I'm also taking other exit courses. I currently have a 3.4 cumul.gpa and a 3.1 sci gpa. I am taking my DAT July 22. Also, do I have a good chance of getting in with my gpa if I do well on the DAT?

If you do above average, 20 or so, on the DAT your chance will improve big time, even if not you still have a pretty decent shot at it. Your GPA is really pretty good though. As for when to send in the app, do it NOW! The sooner you can send it in the better off you are. You won't get any interviews until your DAT is done, you might want to fax in your scores to each school (thats what I would do in your shoes). DO NOT wait to submit your app. If you are serious about applying this year than do it NOW!!

Best of luck to you!

But some of the schools I'm applying to require a C or better in the pre-req courses, like Physics II. So wouldn't sending it in with a C- hinder my chances? And wouldn't waiting pull up my gpa a bit?

No, just simply indicate that you are going to retake physics, and they will understand - and any admissions would be dependent on your passing that physics class.

I had a similar GPA, slightly lower in fact, and my 22AA on the DAT really counterbalanced my low GPA to make me competitive - especially at schools that mostly focus on DAT. I would say if you get 20 or above you will still have a decent shot.

Good luck!

ok I have another problem. I'm applying to Tufts and they require at least 30 hours from a general dentist. I'm currently shadowing one and have only logged in 18 hours... so I should wait right?

The C- I do not believe will hinder you. Indiana U required a 18 in RC and I got a 17 and still had an interview, now I know that is the DAT but I can't imagine the same does not apply for these requirements. While waiting will pull up your GPA it will not help your chances. Applying earlier is MORE IMPORTANT then just about anything and if I were to apply this year I would send in everything, or at least everything I had, on the VERY FIRST DAY!!

As for the shadowing, most d schools do require around 30 or more hours. If you do not have that then you might want to just apply to a few schools this year, if you want. Apply to your state school and maybe a few more, if the resources allow. If not then maybe your best way would be to wait until next year. It sounds like you might be a little behind the ball this year. If you are going to apply I still advise doing it NOW and updating the schools about DAT's GPA...etc. I think I would put that I had all 30 hours and I would make sure to get them done ASAP!!

No they can still give you an interview without having that. I gave Tufts my hours after my interview because I was working in a dental office but didn't start until after I had already applied. So I would send it in and you can always update the schools later on.

My advisor told me to wait until my spring quarter grades came out (next Wed) before I applied. From what I'm getting from this thread, you're recommending otherwise? What should I do?

From what I heard from other threads is that as long as the app is sent in before July it would be considered early.

Definitely wait for spring grades before sending in your transcripts. I've heard that some schools will wait to send out interviews until they get updated transcripts. Either way, waiting a few days for the spring grades to be included couldn't hurt at all.
