So here is the situation, I'm about half way through my IM rotation and I probably won't get a LOR from the inpatient side due to unfortunate timing. Basically we had a different attending almost every week or less than a week. This of course has made getting a strong LOR difficult. I'm hoping I can get one from my two week outpt portion though. Anyway, I was under the impression that a strong LOR from IM is pretty vital in applying for derm. So I'll try to get one from outpt but I've been thinking about doing an early IM sub-I. My original plan would be to get as much derm time in as possible before ERAS is due especially since I'm coming to the game late (was previously pursuing a different specialty until into 3rd year). But recently I've been musing about getting the IM sub-i early.

So the question is would it be more advantageous to do home/away/research rotations in derm and let the letter for IM fall where it may or try to get the 4 wk sub-I in early and work for a really strong IM letter? (around the end of may) Also is a sub-I something that is expected to be completed in derm or is it advantageous? Thanks in advance!

I think that advice has changed now. The best letters are from well-known dermatologists who know you well and can write you an outstanding LOR that reflects how well they know you.

I don't think you need to rush the sub-I (I didn't do my IM sub-I until I had matched in March of my 4th year)

As far as I know, not many places offer a derm sub-I, you typically have to take elective time to do a home rotation and then away rotations in derm.

I have heard more competitive prelim or TY programs will request an IM letter so depending on what your plans are for internship, that may determine when you take your sub-I.

Perfect, thank you!

Agree with asmallchild. Derm letters are queen/king. I hope you have at least one strong letter from IM from your third year rotations for the prelim/TY applications.
