Hi guys!

I'm an Irish student who has recently graduated from Medicine. I am hoping to practice medicine abroad at some point - sooner rather than later!

I was wondering if it is best to apply for jobs in Canada following my family medicine scheme in Ireland or if there are locum/short term positions available to IMGs if I were to live there for a year or so?

I just want to stress that I'm not applying to a residency!

Thanks 🙂

I think its best to apply for jobs in Canada following FM in Ireland. I'm pretty sure they are not willing to take anyone who does not have family medicine training.

wait a minute, isn't a family medicine residency required to practice family medicine?

Yeah it is. I think he was referring to jobs you could do that didn't require completion of residency in Canada. There aren't any jobs like that in Canada.

Hi guys. Need a little help here. I'm a medical student currently studying in Pakistan and I want to do my residency (preferably in Psychiatry) somewhere abroad. Right now my preferences are anywhere in the UK, New Zealand, Australia. I'm considering USA too but I've heard it's too competitive over there. I don't know much about how to apply, when to apply, what exams to give, what the requirements are and how are the job prospects for the above-mentioned countries The thing is that I don't have much information on how to go about this, so a little help would be much appreciated.

I'm assuming you're considering Canada as well since you posted here. Canada is not an option for residency if you're not a citizen/Permanent resident. It's the rule and there's no if's and buts about it. There's little to no chance of getting UK residency without EU citizenship regardless of how well you do on PLAB. I think Australia/New Zealand has a specialist pathway where a practicing doc can get licensure there, but i'm not sure about the process. Getting residency in these countries as a foreign student is nearly impossible since they don't have enough spots for their own students or students studying there. Just google "Australia internship crisis".

That leaves us with USA and i think it's your best option. It's competitive Yes but you have the greatest chance of landing a residency in USA than the countries you've mentioned. Research more about practicing in USA and make sure to do well on your steps.

Good luck!

Hi there,
I am an IMG. I have done medical exams in Canada(MCCEE&NAC), but I did not still match.
Given that I have the US green card, I am wondering if pursuing USMLE exams or doing MCQ exam would be quicker for work or residency?

I am very thankful for your response
if you have an experience of that.

Cheers,

It would seem that you are an FMG? Since you don't already have the USMLEs.

What were your scores? (PM me if you like) and what specialties in Canada did you apply?

Year of graduation? Doing the USMLEs is likely your best option if you want to get a residency.

But of course there are a few more details to know, since its a very individualized decision making situation.
