I wanted to know how much of implant dentistry is covered in DDS program. Is it just the restorative aspect of it? Or even implant surgeries? Also, what forms the majority of implant cases? Is it overdentures or replacement for partially edentulous arches?
I am an international student applying for residency program and wanted to know how much is already covered for the undergraduates in the US.

If anyone has any relevant information, please do share Google does not give real time information. I want to know from the students themselves.

I think most DDS/DMD programs are teaching restorative and some are giving placement experience. I know at my school all students are required to learn to restore and a small handful can get guided opportunities to place implants. I don’t think it’s nearly enough to graduate proficient to place implants regularly. I don’t know how it is for other schools but I think it is a safe bet to say either a residency or some additional CE courses are going to be required for real proficiency.

We do get experience with a variety of cases (immediate implant placement, all on fours occasionally etc) but once again, it’s opportuntities to learn and mostly shadow, I think few opportunities to place yourself in dentals school.

I am curious how other people’s experience with implants are in DS

Oh that's great! In my country, implant placements are done during residency, so I was worried if it is already covered in Dental schools in the US, as then my program would expect me to know. Thanks a lot!

Midwestern IL students place implants. Each student gets 2 'free' implants a year to offer to patients as well. This ensure you get plenty of exposure and practice.

I would say that placing implants is NOT the norm for most US DDS/DMD programs, so I don't think they would expect you to come in with that knowledge. MWU seems to be the exception to the norm in this aspect

I think NYU does it as a part of an honors program for fourth years but you have to apply for it and it’s probably competitive. You can just do CEs for implants after dental school if you’re interested. But you have to pay a good amount for those. You might be able to do them during school and get a discount on them for being a student, not too sure about that though.

Implants are becoming standard of care for many general dentists, there are some $10k CE programs that allow you to place up to 10-15 implants in a week. It's not a particularly complicated procedure, certainly not worth spending 200k+ extra to go to MWU.
