😕 No one completes a residency after 1 year. Do you mean internship or something else?

Yes, I meant if one finishes the internship( 1 year out of the 3 year training of IM for eg).

Some states only require a year of postgraduate training to get licensed. However, you'll find it very, very difficult for a hospital to grant you priviledges.

Besides, think of your patients... would you want to go to a doc with only one year of training? Would you want a doc like that treating your parents?

Southerndoc is correct. Once you've completed 1 year of training you can be licensed in some states (eg. CA). Others require longer training for licensure (Eg. NV requires at least 3 years). I don't know of any state that lets you get licensed without completing even 1 year.

So the answer is that if you quit before completing 1 year you won't be able to practice medicine. You could decide not to get licensed and go work for a drug company or a pharm company if you can get a job with them or you might be able to do research. Once you finish internship you could get licensed (in certain states) and practice although your options will be limited since you can't be board certified.

I think the question behind the question is: should I quit my residency? The answer is almost always...no.

Everyone thinks about quitting in their intern year. It's the hardest in terms of hours, you don't know that much, you don't know the nurses and attendings. Intern year can really suck, but it does get better. Quitting in the middle of intern year is like eating your peas and leaving before dessert.

The best is yet to come. Don't give up yet. Play a game with yourself: You have to think about quitting 100 times before you can actually quit - and by that time you've gotten past the worst part.

Good luck,
Above and Beyond

Think long and hard about quitting but remember that there are thousands of other things besides medicine. You may even end up happier than if you "tough it out".

Ask yourself if the things that are making you unhappy now going to change after your internship and/or residency (i.e. the workload doesn't get much lighter for most docs but your independence will be gained, etc.).

Good Luck!

suppose you get into a program in the middle of nowhere and you start the internship, 3- 4 months later you know you cannot go on, the question is WILL ERAS LET YOU APPLY FOR 2006 MATCH ???

I am thinking of the worst of the worst..but never know.

So maybe you are talking about transferring to another residency program after one year. There have been quite a few threads about this topic.
