hello

I am somewhat concerned with the importance of the basic med. science grades when one applies for residency positions and hoping somone would provide some insight.
I did some initial search on this forum, but haven't found any answers to my concerns.
Basically, I received 3 Cs on my first year med. courses and am still depressed because I was never a C student in college. I have been doing better in Path. and Pharm in the second year, but I am still concern witht those grades in the first year. I studied so much for the exams, but did not get grades I deserved.
I like to have some options when the time comes for residency applications. Would those grades shut me out of the competitive specialty programs (like cardiology, ENT, or rad onc) even with a strong step 1 score?
thanks all for your input

I wouldn't see how three C's in basic science courses in your first two years would have much effect AT ALL on residency applications. Many schools have a pass/fail system of grading. My school has a modified pass/fal system: Honors, High Pass, Pass, Marginal Performance (Failing but close), and Fail. Pass is the equivalent of an 70-87 typically. As you might imagine, most people get a "Pass" in way more than 3 classes!

USMLE Step 1 and clinical grades are FAR more important!

Of course I am not a resident yet, so anyone else care to chime in??

thanks for the inputstw2361.
. it's a relief to hear that the grades wouldn't have much affect on the residency application. I would like to hear what other may think on this issue.
thanks
