Hey all-

I'm halfway through interviews and I've been wondering about a question for a while now. I'm still in school this year, and I'm taking a particularly difficult class load that is made harder by having to miss class for interviews. I was wondering - for non-rolling schools, how much does my GPA for this semester make a difference? I'm not expecting to do terrible but I certainly don't see my grades being all that great.

Do schools really look at it? I know at a lot of the rolling schools I have been to they explicitly say that they don't need the grades from this year, but I haven't heard anything similar from non-rolling schools.

I am wondering about this too. I've already been accepted somewhere, but I'm worried because my grades this semester will be quite a bit lower than my AMCAS GPA due to being sick multiple times, interviews and a crazy course load. How much will this affect me at my acceptances? I doubt it would play a huge role unless I did really bad but piece of mind would be nice.

acutally. me three. does anyone have any idea the minimum? i went from 5 courses, dropped 3, and will have to take a crayy amt next sem. not to say this sem is pretty bad still as it is...

rolling and nolrolling. high ranked and low ranked schools. do they look at this year's gpa at all?

if you are waitlisted your schools might like to see a transcript to update your file...but i think schools that have accepted you just want to see you pass. most will ask you for a transcript once all of your courses are done (i.e. after spring semester for traditional applicants) but it's mostly to make sure that you've filled all of their prerequisites with a passing grade.

What about for schools that don't send out acceptances until March? I assume they would have ample time to review new grades.

Me four. I'm getting owned by my classes, with all the missed classes because of interview flights and being sick, and general craziness. Really worried.

Your grades matter until you get that acceptance letter. Once you're accepted, your acceptance letter will outline the requirements in order to matriculate. For most schools, this means you just need to pass.

Schools that have rolling admissions review new grades too. So, unfortunately, you can't stop stressing about grades until you get in.

The thing is though that at several of them they have explicitly said that they don't want grades from this semester because to be offered an interview you have to have already passed their academic requirements...

That may be true for some schools but it isn't true for every school. And if you end up re-applying next year, you'll have to report this semesters grades on your app. Hence, you really can't stop worrying about grades until you get in.

question. say for those non rolling schools, will they want the grades from this semester before they make their decision for march?

Depends on the school. My school was non rolling when I applied and did request fall semester grades in December. However, this I'm sure varies from school to school.

YES i did not apply there. that gives me hope. LOL :S

For rolling schools that we've been admitted to, do we need to send them grades after this semester, or just a final transcript after next semester? I ask because I want to know if it can affect financial aid in any way.

Depends on what your school asks for. If you've been accepted, typically they only ask for final transcripts before med school starts. I don't see how this would have any affect on financial aid though.

what if you got straight B's senior year.. throw in a couple B-'s even.. and you were already accepted. Can they take it back? lol

They really wouldn't care about that.

One question I have regarding this subject: What if you're accepted but waitlisted/waiting to hear from another school? Would anything that brings your GPA down (even .01) mess you up if you decide to send an update/interest letter? Or is it just not worth mentioning?

matriculated stats... do they consider the final transcript gpa, or the gpa when accepted (say, accepted now, and disregarding entirety of senior year?)

That's a great question... my accepted GPA will definitely not equal my GPA upon graduation this spring. 😳

lol. yeah. so i was wondering, if the matriculated stats on msar are based on the point of time when the individual was accepted, then schools have no incentive to withdraw the offer and give it to someone else.

This makes sense, because many schools give a GPA range from x.xx - 4.00 as their matriculating student GPA. Unless we're all secretly robots with no desire for relaxation or fun our senior year, final GPAs of 4.0 are going to be few and far between.

add me to the list...my school requires that you "pass" all classes, C or higher, otherwise you got some explainin to do!

I doubt any school would care about that. Like I said earlier though, your acceptance letter tells you what you have to do in order to matriculate.

The MSAR reports "accepted" stats not "matriculated" stats. Most schools are not going to withdraw an acceptance just to raise their schools stats by a fraction of a percentage point. Once you're accepted, you're golden unless you do something really stupid like fail a class, not graduate, get arrested, etc. My advice like I said before though, don't put your feet up until you actually get accepted. Even if your application is rock solid, you might be applying next year and you don't want to give your application a black eye just because you have lots of interviews or whatever.

thanks medman. what u say is completely true, but perhaps im trying to just screen what u say out because i feel my gpa this sem is beyond ressurectioin, but ill still try!!

ie... running away from the truth 🙁 damnnnn

Well, if you have a good track record up to this point and your gpa takes a little dip, the fact that you've been interviewing gives you a plausible explanation you could give to schools if you did end up reapplying. All I am saying is don't just let your gpa tank because you're in your senior year and are experiencing some 4th quarter burnout cause it might come back to bite you next year.
