I never fully appreciated a good tour from a bad tour until i went to BU. of the schools i interviewed at, BU's facilities were definately on the higher side. in addition, it was also in boston...a wonderful city. however, i was not attracted to the school post interview (or at least, i didnt enjoy my experience as much as i should have...everything else was good). it had nothing to do with my actual interview, the faculty, the curriculum, the rep...etc etc...but it was bc of the tour! our tour guide gave us a what-seemed-to-be forever tour and yet we recieved nothing informative. she went to every floor...and gave us idiosyncratic details...that none of would remember nor care about. further, she would repeat pointless stuff like..."ok, were on floor 3...theres a window that you can look out of...theres a bathroom in case you need to use it....this room is a lab room like the 4 floors prior..." One time she spent 10 minutes on the mail boxes and seating charts! she was like..."here are the mail boxes...if u peek inside..you'l see mail..." Oh, and she had a dry sense of humor and was monotone. In contrast, had it not been for the super enthusiastic tourguide from temple, Brian, i probably would not have loved Temple so much. enthusiasm is contagious, and Brian really sold his school despite the obvious shortcomings the city has to offer. My other tours were all good in their own way, or at least did an adequate job of selling their school. During my students survey, i suggested this tourguide to stop giving tours in the future. Not bc i'm a hater or anything, but i spoke to a few of the other interviewees and we found the tour to be dreadful and boring at best. I feel it would be in BU's favor to select a tourguide who seems to like/know more about the school. thats my rant for the day 😀
