  1. Pre-Dental
hey everyone,

I have a question that deals with the application.
I applied to med school last year (because of my dad who is a doctor) and was accepted but i wanted to pursue dentistry instead.

on the application it says to mention if you applied to other health professional schools and if you were accepted or rejected. I dunno if i should put i did because the official guide for dental school says not to mention it and to say that i didnt apply.

I am wondering on what to do about that, and if i were to put no would dental school find out that i did. Also, would dental schools look at me turning down an acceptance as a bad quality in me.

Sorry for all the questions... I just want to be safe.

thanks

Well, it's not like you didn't get in and are now trying to get into dental school. You actually got accepted and turned it down so that might look a little different in their eyes. I don't know what to tell you. You could be honest and some may like it. Or you could lie and get caught too.

safe = honesty.

I don't think they could find out, but it is an important part of your life. You may have trouble not talking about it or could end up spitting it out at your interview. I think it is best to play it safe, lots of applicants switch over, but you have to make the right decision 🙂 .

I agree with this; who better to KNOW that dentistry is perfect for him/her than someone who withdraws an acceptance and spends another year applying to d-school? Sure, they may ask about it, but use it to your advantage, just like any other "iffy" bit of history that we all have...

Also, I would definitely not lie. Especially since dental and med schools are so closely associated, they can easily find out this information if they felt the need to look for it. It's easier to explain something ON your app than something NOT on it that they found out.... 😳

you turned down medical school so you can pursue dentistry. that's goldmine. dental adcoms will eat that up like a starved somalian on thanksgiving table. good luck dude!

Be completely honest in filling out your application or it could come back to haunt you. Then just make sure to give good reasons for why you pursued medicine, but found that dentistry is for you. This kind of experience could set your application apart from a ton of other highly competitive applicants.

where does it say not to mention it?

i am having the same problem, but i applied and then withdrew my applications.

should i still put this down as is -- applied but withdrew applications?

i would like to avoid mentioning this on the application as well... 🙂

Hi all,

I strongly believe that if anyone of the adcom looks at a person who applies to dental school who did not gain admission to medical school with a negative eye is a complete bigot. This kind of "adverserial mentality" no wonder why some dentists feel uneasy around physicians... There is nothing wrong with considering dentistry as an excellent alternative career to ones who could not gain admission to the medical school. It is a known fact that medical school admission is very competitive so not many people cannot make the cut. In my class, there were at least three who could not enter medical school now all productive dental professionals . What would happen to them if they were denied admission because they once tried medical path? The mentality of " you choose us or choose nobody" thinking among ourselves is destructive and does nothing but produce low morals in our field. In your case, even if you are denied admission I would not hesitate to tell them as there is NOTHING wrong with choosing dentistry as an excellent alternative to medicine. DP

I think honesty is always the best policy on your application.

I also think that you should be honest about it. I also applied to medical schools before applying to dental schools. But in my personal statement I made it very clear why I applied to medical schools and why I decided to withdraw my application to medical schools. Also, have some dental experience and make sure you really enjoy dentistry. And be prepared to answer questions about why you changed your mind about career in medicine and what you think is different in dentistry that you are more attracted to.

I really think that as long as you have good gpa and dat your will get in to some dental school in spite of whatever medical school you have applied to. If you lie that you have not applied to any medical school before, you might get into trouble for that. I know a lot of schools offer both medical and dental education, and they would probably find out that you have applied to both schools.

I hope that helps. and good luck.
