Hello!

My wife has just completed her USMLE Step 2 exam and has officially completed her medical school and cleared her "student" status. Because of our personal situation, she will not be able to start her residency immediately and fulfill the demanding time requirements/commitments for her residency. We expect to have our personal situation in a better shape within a year. With that said, she is planning to take a year "off" and then apply for residency to start in 2010.

Realistically we do NOT want her to sit completely idle for the next year or so until she starts her residency. Even with our personal situation, she can still commit good 40 hours a week (just not the usual 80-90 hours required by a typical residency program.)

Question: What are the options available to her while she waits until her residency in 2010? Of course, she can go find a job not related to medicine at all but that is not a good use of her time. We are trying to find something where she can gain more knowledge / experience related to her field as well as make whatever nominal money that she can to start paying off her HUGE education debt. Any options that'll help her cause? Any ideas / help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
V

1) medical research (i.e. lab technician or "research fellow") at an academic medical center
2) some other job in a hospital (but without special certifications like an EMT, cytotechnologist, etc. it will be hard to get any decent hospital job).
3) medical assistant at a medical office (might be hard to get for the same reasons as in #2, but private physician offices may have a little more leeway...I don't have much personal knowledge of private practice, though).

Agree with above regarding options for employment.

Does anyone else ever wonder why there are so many questions about what a poster's spouse should do? Why isn't the spouse posting?
