So I'm a traditional student graduating this spring and I graduate in about two and a half weeks (May 18th). It's been a long road, and to be honest, I didn't think I'd make it this far. I had a terrible performance in high school and I didn't think that I'd get accepted to a 4 year university. When I discovered that I wanted to go into medicine, something changed. To make the long story short, I got accepted to my first choice this cycle and I am beyond ecstatic. I was an underdog coming in this cycle and still kind of can't believe that I'm fortunate enough to be where I am now.

After graduation, my school's process for conferral of degrees takes longer than other schools. I go to a large school with I suppose thousands of people graduating, so it takes them a bit longer to process. Best case scenario, my degree would be posted on my transcript by the second week of June. Worst case scenario, around late July. I was wondering if maybe any of you have gone through this before? How did it turn out?

Call the med school and describe your situation to them. It's not a big deal as long as you have all your pre-reqs done.

I did. I have a little over a month after my semester ends to submit my transcript. Trying to do everything I can to buy some time. I'm getting nervous, but not losing hope just yet.

When is the transcript due? I went to a university with 30,000 students and they always have final grades posted a week after the term ends. In addition, can you make an early request to have transcripts sent out ASAP? Maybe if they see yours are needed by an academic institution they'll place yours ahead of others

What did they tell you? I can't believe that they would just drop your acceptance because your university is screwing you over.

My grades would be posted fairly quickly. Also about a week. It's just that it won't say my degree at the bottom of the transcript until a few weeks after. I did speak to the higher ups at my university and they are putting my file up, so hopefully I can have my degree sooner than later.

They did give me more time, time that I'm extremely grateful for. I just hope that it would be enough. I spoke to the people in charge of degree conferrals and hopefully they will be able to follow through.

They're not going to revoke your acceptance based off of when your school sends out transcripts. Just have them sent in ASAP. I'm sure if worse comes to worse, they can always call your school's registrar.

Thanks for the positive outlook! I really hope you're right. The people who confer degrees at my university actually offered to write me a letter stating that I have completed my degree and that the system is just running its course and will soon appear on my transcript. I really hope this would suffice.

Deep breaths...if your med school said they will wait, just turn in the letter now and the degree when it's processed

I agree with everyone above. Just also make sure that the med school is thoroughly aware of the situation and the fact that a lot of it is out of your control. Maybe even email them and get a response acknowledging that they're aware just so you have written proof.

I still have to wait for the semester to end. Even then, they said that they will have to see the letter first to see if they'll honor it. They just want me to send in the transcript as soon as possible, which I'm pushing to do.

Thanks. I did actually email them saying that I will have the transcript within the timeframe given. I might actually have it granted my university follows through and put me on the priority list for degree conferral.

I think that's what sucks, it's out of my control. I will definitely do everything that I can, but unfortunately I can only do so much. The med school really wants me to turn everything in prior to orientation. When my grades are posted, I'll take the director of undergraduate degree's offer to write me a letter saying that I have earned my degree and that the system is just processing it until it's posted on my transcript. I really hope my med school honors it.

As long as your med school knows what's going on, you should be fine.

I'd just keep after your registrar's office as well. I graduated from a major university several years ago, and while it took a couple of months to get my actual diploma, my transcript showed the degree almost immediately.

I'll keep an eye out for that, thanks! I really hope mine would be posted immediately as well. I'll actually order my transcript ahead of time pending the release of my degree.

Did your school actually SAY they will revoke your acceptance? Or are you just assuming that?

Many programs (not necessarily med school - just programs/jobs that require a 4 year degree) will be satisfied in the in the interim by a letter from the registrar, etc pending confirmation of the actual final transcript.

As others have said, get a letter from your school (I'd suggest registrar as they have experience with this) and get it to your school ASAP (overnight that bad boy!)

I spoke to the admissions people at my school and yes, they said that ultimately if I cannot provide my transcript with the conferral of my degree in a reasonable time, I will be asked to give up my seat. I did ask my university to send out a letter to my school saying that my degree is pending and that I am set to graduate this spring. If the transcript is taking a little longer than expected, I will ask the department of undergraduate degree to send another letter stating that I have fulfilled the requirements to earn my degree and it's just running its course through the university's system.

Another cause for concern for me is that I turned down a lot of the schools that invited me for an interview. My reasoning is that I got accepted to my top choice. I thanked them graciously for the opportunity but in the worst case scenario that I have to apply again, I doubt those schools would offer me an interview, let alone an acceptance. So I'm really counting on this.

On the bright side, in the number of years that I've been here on sdn, I haven't come across anyone who's acceptance was revoked simply because their university couldn't release their transcript on time and I'd hate to be the first.

Ya I can't imagine this realistically being a problem. It is one thing if you had the transcript/diploma in hand and wasn't sending them, but you're just waiting on your school.

Just keep all parties on their toes and updated. You'll be fine.

@Goro Have you ever heard of someone's acceptance being taken away because the student's undergraduate university can't put their degree on their transcript on time? Do you think that a letter from my undergraduate institution stating that I have earned my degree and it's in the process of being transcribed on my official transcript will suffice? Thank you!

I really don't think any med school is going to revoke your acceptance based on your university's inability to produce official documentation in time. Take it easy, don't sweat it, and just make sure you are keeping the med school appraised every week or so of what's going on and that you are doing what you can to expedite the process. This is nothing to worry about. It's probably just an over-eager office administrator trying to get his/her work done.

Nope. I would guess that the paperwork needs to be competed by matriculation. But I think we should ask @LizzyM and @gyngyn

Thanks for your response @Goro! Really really appreciate it. I was able to sign up for classes, but I sure I don't get dropped!

And yes please! I'd love @LizzyM and @gyngyn 's input.

Thanks for your input! I will keep the admissions department up to date once every week or two. I will definitely give it all I got. I'll do everything I can, I can't lose this one.

Transcripts by matriculation will be fine.

@gyngyn, by matriculation, do you mean before school starts or when signing up for classes? Because I already signed up for classes, my hold was removed after my health clearance came through.

Thank you for your response!

First day of orientation.

That reminds me. I should really get my transcripts in. Don't be like me OP! :ninja:

I actually did submit my transcripts last March. But they only included the fall semester and not the Spring. I have no idea how long it will take for my spring grades/degree to get posted, but I'm hoping it will be on time.

So the consensus seems to be that I have until the first day of orientation to submit my transcript. I would like to thank all of you for your input. I will post an update at the end of the cycle for future references.
