Not even done with med school and already thinking about the next round of exams. 😱 I'll be starting my peds residency this July and we already have a 4 hour in house exam scheduled in mid-July. Can anyone tell me more about these? Are they standardized or are they program specific? Are you given the results so you know what your weaknesses are? How often are they usually given? What resources can you recommend to review?
Thnx

Relax.

Everyone takes them every year. It's a standardized assessment of your preparedness for the pedi boards. You will get the results a couple of months later along with data about how you compared to your peers and how well ppl who scored like you eventually do on the boards.

Many (most?) programs look for improvement on these scores in your 2nd and 3rd year, so it's not all that helpful to prepare in advance for your first one. Besides, you have more important things to do, like be a July intern. 😉

Don't sweat it!

Don't sweat it like OP said. In fact, its to your advantage not to prepare so that in following years you will show drastic improvement and please your program director! ;-) Seriously, it's just a baseline from where you're starting. NOONE will judge you based on that score. Just do your best.

are these used at all in fellowship applications? are the scores published like step scores or are they truly just to assess your own preparedness?

They aren't released or published. It's an internal thing and nothing to worry about. No one in my fellowship interviews even asked about them.

The actual scores are never on the fellowship applications that I've seen. On the rarest of occasions, in a letter, the PD may make a vague comment about "good in-service scores". They shouldn't do that and it is, from what I've personally seen, only done for FMGs where the PD may think that is helpful.
